Thanks Brian, I thought you might recognise me with that "Unallocated" Prime Partition on my HD2! (created following your advice some time ago!). I just wanted to confirm that Ghost copied the MBR! Yes, I did remember that Ghost 14 doesn't make whole HD (disk) Images, so thought it must copy the MBR with the Active Primary Partition's Image but needed to confirm this! I was helping someone with Acronis True Image, but as it allows full HD Image BUs, I am not so sure if it also copies the MBR, with the Active Prime Partition, as you have now confirmed Ghost does, this would be a drawback, if it doesn’t! Thanks again Brian, take care, and I am very pleased that you are still helping with Ghost issues so skillfully!
Bruce.

Hello all, and apologies in advance if this has been covered, I couldn't find any info on this. Former expert on Norton Ghost 2001, new to NG 14.0

Using Norton Ghost 14.0 - Windows XP Pro 64, installed fine, all running.

I want to create a backup of a Linux system - maybe write it to DVD or even USB drive.

From Windows, running NG 14.0, I can add the linux computer through the network connections setup, but since it's not a Windows machine and doesn't have the RPC service that NG is looking for, I can't deploy the Norton "agent" required, so that option is out.

Booting the Linux machine with the original NG 14.0 CD works fine, but there is no menu that I can find that will let me create a backup or clone a partition or the entire disk.

NG 14.0 docs say this supports Linux with Ext3 partitions. Does that mean that it can write TO Ext3 partitions, or read from and create backups of Ext3 partitions? Silly, I know, but I never expected to be able to install/run NG on Linux, just to be able to make a backup of a partition or the whole disk.

If there is a way to do what I'm trying to do, I would appreciate a quick howto, because the manual (printed or PDF) doesn't talk about it.

Thanks in advance and best regards

@
russ

The only reliable way to clone to a smaller partition is to resize the source partition to the size of the target partition and then clone. It may work without resizing but it depends on the data spread in the source partition.

If your original partition was....( * is sectors in use, - is free space)

[---**----**--]

then the target partition to restore into can not be smaller than...

[---**----**]

The following will not work although it has space for the data, [****-]

For backups, creating an image (recovery point) is what most folks do.
I never received a notification that anyone posted so never replied. Sorry about that.

To answer the questions for others benifit:
Yes I was using Ghost 14.
Yes it is a Dell that I stripped and stored with my own OS...but as I said also installed the media direct program that creates a partition.

The new hard drive showed with the correct size in the bios and the image was on an external drive. The new drive was bare and unpartitioned.

Here is the solution.... After much research, this is a common problem with Dell's.....even if you install fresh like I do, if you install the media direct option.

The solution was to use the "fix MBR" command after the restore from the vista rescue console command prompt. That got me into windows..I then deleted the "hidden" or media direct partition and I got the full size of my drive back and all has been well. And of course I did NOT re-install that media direct nonsense.

I still think the just ridiculous nature of the liveupdate Ghost patch process for this version of Ghose...CD in...CD out....spin around, hope it takes was ridiculous. I certainly hope this is fixed in the next version.

BJB
I am trying to create a ghost 2 disk floppy, (ver.793) that I can use on my multple pc's to make backups to DVD-R discs(non rewritable) Mixture of intel and via boards.
Using msdos from 98se floppy.

model Sony DRX-83u external usb DVD-RW

From the get go on the first system so far I am assume this is not as easy as backing up to internal HD or DVD.
Intel board BIOS detects as "sony dvdrw as dru-830" under boot> ATAPI cdrom with legacy usb and usb boot options set to disable. I have left the legacy support in the bios to disabled since both here and the intel pdf for the board said it could cause conflicts.

I have tried:
Standard disk with usb for 1.1 and 2.0 and advanced settings
generic startup disk with ghost
generic usbaspi.sys, but not sure if I edited config and autoexec files correctly.

Is this possible?

Thanks

Hi Flix,

Just to let you know you're not alone with this issue.

I've just got a new laptop and tried to use my old floppy boot disks, complete with USB drivers, and it hangs like yours.

My old laptop has a 32 bit CPU running 32 bit XP with a SATA HDD (had some fun getting that going, way back when)

The new one's got a 64 bit CPU, 32-bit OS (need that for some software that's not 64 bit) Vista and, I think, a SATA HDD.

I wanted to Ghost before upgrading to Windows 7, 32 bit.

Like you, I've tried changing some of the config.sys settings but so far not got it to recognise my external HDD. It's the same external USB HDD that works on my old laptop with the same floppy boot disk. I've several other external USB HDD's so I'll follow Nightowls suggestion and see if any of those are recognised.

I've a legitimate copy of Ghost 9.0 but only ever used the old DOS command line Ghost (build 775).

When (if?) I make some progress I'll post again.

"are you using *ghost32.exe* to run Ghost from within Windows from the WD HDD?" yes.
It didn't work.
I used Windows to do a quick format of the Windows partition (Windows does not allow me to format the Linux partitions) and then do a local disk-to-disk clone with the image boot option. Ghost gave me this same message twice: "Ghost has detected problems witha a Linux volume. The volume was most probably not unmounted cleanly. We recommend that you quite Ghost and correct the problem by running fsck on this volume. Alternatively, you may also continue normally." I don't know how to use fsck so I clicked Continue. I do not know which Linux volume it referred to. There are 3 linux partitions on my IBM disk and as a result of the previous cloning attempt, there are also 3 Linux partitions on the Hitachi disk. After the cloning "successfully" completed, I tried to boot from the Hitachi disk but got half screen of 99s, as before.

The Ghosterr file reads:

*********************************
Date : Mon Nov 16 18:26:44 2009
Error Number: (652)
Message: Attempted to access an inconsistent Linux partition.
Operation aborted at user request.

Version: 11.0.2.1573 (Nov 14 2007, Build=1573)
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (Build 2600)
Command line arguments:
Active Switches :
Spanning
AutoName
Image Boot
PathName :
DumpFile :
DumpPos : 0
FlagImplode : 0
FlagExplode : 0

Operation Details :
Total size.........0
MB copied..........0
MB remaining.......0
Percent complete...0%
Speed..............0 MB/min
Time elapsed.......0:00
Time remaining.....0:00

Program Call Stack
AbortLog
Generic_Abort
CopyPartition
ProcessAllPartitions
CopyAllPartitions
CopyDiskToDisk
CopyMainline
AttemptOperation
sub_main
main

Call Stack
Address Frame Logical Addr Module
0x000000007c90e514 0x000000000012d5ac KiFastSystemCallRet+0x0000000000000000
0x000000000012d8ac 0x0000000000000003 0x0000:0x0000000000000000
End Call Stack

---

I have just tried the entire process again to no avail, with the same error message.
One thing interesting is that the sizes of the partitions on the IBM disk are scaled proportionally on the Hitachi disk. That is, say the Windows partition on the IBM IDE is 10GB, the Windows partition on the Hitachi is 120 GB; and if the Linux partitions on the IBM are 2GB, 1GB, 4GB respctively, then the Linux partitions on the IBM are 24GB, 12GB, 48GB after the disk-to-disk cloning. Is there a way to change this scaling?

Try going here: https://www.mynortonaccount.com/amsweb/default.do and typing in a password. I would assume that if you purchased the software directly from Symantec you have an account. If that is the case, click on the software you need info for and I think you should find what you need.
