Title: Ghost Decompression error -3
Post by Xupa on Sep 6th, 2005 at 10:53am
Hello,

I am having some problems restoring a previous image I had created with Ghost 8.2. I made an image file (only partition c: ) from one HD to another HD on the same machine from DOS , in the end no error was reported but I didn't verify the image. When I try to restore that same image I got this error: 19235: Decompression error -3, when using Ghost explorer it freezes around 48%, any ideas how to restore this image? Or how to recover some of the files inside the image file? They are 6 files, with 2Gb each. Thank you.

Cleon

Xupa

Can you perform an *integrity check* on that image from Ghost in DOS?--results?

What are the details of how you are trying to do a restore?

In DOS?

From image to .... ?

Still on the same machine?

Have you changed the configuration of how the HDD's are hooked up?

I have the same problem, but:
- when I rstore over LAN : no problem (with lan-bootdisk)
- when I try to restore from drive E: (simple-bootdisk): it gives me this error ! The Partitions are  NTFS, so I'm using NTFSDOS v3.02
perhaps this is the problem ... :(

Do you know any solution for this ?

Thanx

To Xupa & chros

Have you resolved the decompression error in the past 17 months? ;D Here's what I discovered so far.

SUMMARY:  I've been getting decompression errors with Ghost 2003 when backing up to an external hard drive connected via USB.  I haven't narrowed down the problem, but it may be related to a specific USB port on my PC or related to high-density compression.  However I did NOT encounter an error with BackUp MyPC using the same USB port.

DETAILS: All my image backups were done by Ghost 2003 unless otherwise specified.  All are Ghost backups (BU's), not clones.  I was not always at the PC when the decompression errors occurred, but I believe they all occurred when creating the image, not when verifying the image.  In order to more easily see the variables, I've constructed the following header and list items:

External Drive / USB Port / USB Cable / [Error number (if any)  / Decompression Error (if any)] or [other note] / Date
WD160 / B / X / seven Ghost BUs without error since Sept 2003
WD160 / B / X / 19235 / -3 /  Jan 7 2007
WD160 / B / X / 19235 / -5 /  Jan 7
80GB   / A / Y / Ghost BU without error  (note diff port & diff cable) / Jan 7
WD160 / B / X / 19235 / -5 / Feb 10
WD160 / B / X / BackUp MyPC without error (same HD, port & cable) / Feb 10
WD160 / B / X / CHKDSK corrected minor error in one 68704 / Feb 10
WD160 / B / X / CHKDSK found no problems / Feb 11
WD160 / B / X / 19235 / -3 /  Feb 11
WD160 / A / X / Ghost without error using fast compression / Feb 11

The text of the error messages in the Ghost log was:

Error Number: (19235)
Message: Decompression error -3
or
Error Number: (19235)
Message: Decompression error -5

The Ghost BU image size is 7.3 GB and the WD160 drive has 22 GB free space.
