Title: it's 'not formatted, would you like to format now
Post by ypik on Jul 28th, 2008 at 6:39pm
I encountered problem in my win xp partition, yesterday cannot boot computer, it say:
" windows\system32\config\system corrupt  "

then I browse and go to window directory  ERUNT to restore previous registry from ERUNT.exe , ( it backup system registry each day automatically ), it say completed!but cannot backup a new registry.

after reboot, a new message in bios: " missing system 32\hal.dll ",
then I try bartpe cd , start file management tool, browse to my c:\ window directory .it say:

" it's 'not formatted, would you like to format now"but only window directory have this problem ",

but odd thing is , other c:\program, administrator\document,c:\

all of them can be accessed , can copy and move files .Only the window directory have problem.

I try to check bad sector by a software call "HD regenerator", then it found 166 bad sectors and recovered them,

reboot again,  bios now become black screen ,do not have any message pop up!

reboot to bartpe cd, the same , window directory become 0 byte,
it say " Directory unreadable. The file or directory corrupt and unreadable"

-----------------------------

above is the whole story, now, I want to use ghost 8.2 to restore a four month old image,
I have verified the integrity using bartpe cd, I will use bartpe cd to restore the image to the c: drive.

question 1: what should I do before  restore?my system is window xp professional, file system is ntsf

I am afraid the restore process will be halted in the middle because of some disk error make it unwritable , due to the problematic partition as described above.

question 2: will it become unbootable even after successful restore?

I have use ghost several time and success, but this time is beyond my knowledge.

ps: I have used partition doctor to restore partition table, but still no good news.

cannot chkdsk, sector uneadable.

launching ghost  8.3 gui from bartpe cd, I can choose destination partition, that mean the partition appear normally that I can choose .

Help, please.
thanks you very much!
:'(

no one reply?

now c partition is totally raw filesystem ,inaccessible.

launched the ghost 8.3 gui from bartpe cd, that when choosed the destination drive,
it say:

read sector failure,result=1,drive=0
sectors 6291629 to 6291531
please contact......

then do you think that format the c: drive can solve the problem,I think it really necessay to format it in order to restore the image.

please,help ,thanks in advance

hi:

the post starter is me !

but using easyrecovery to check harddrive status :like S.M.A.R.T, it says okay and healthy, other harddrive status is good.

having recovered bad sector by hdd regenerator,  c: drive still inaccessible.
had chkdsk c: /f ,no result! :-?

but after all this jobs, reopen ghost gui ,now it show up the c drive partition ,never have the error message now.

can I just overwrite the c: partition by ghost image?

thanks in advance.

You have nothing to lose. Restore your image.

you are correct, I have to replaced a new hard drive .

but when I give my ghost image to the repair man, he said in the middle of the restore process, a file 415 missed, therefore cannot restore the ghost images, I created the image from ghost 8.2 ,but forgot to tell him to restore with the same version, because I give him a cd that have both 8.2 and 8.11 ghost in it, I still not sure which version he use to restore.

just curious and feel a little nervious, what does it mean missing 415 file?I am afraid this will happen again ,therefore want to know the cause in order to prevent it?

thanks in advance

I know this won't help the current problem, but in the future:::::

Always do a thorough cleaning and error checking on your HD before you make a Ghost Image.  Don't back up junk.....keep your Ghost Image as small as possible.
Use 'chkdsk /f' to make sure your HD is error free, before using Ghost.

Then after you've finished the Ghost backup to whatever media you choose, use Ghost to "Check" the Image file for accuracy, before exiting the program.  "Check" is right there in the Ghost menu.....use it!

Then and only then can you be assured that the Ghost Image will restore properly when you need it.
Remember, only a DISK to IMAGE copy will restore to a new HD and make it bootable.  A Partition Image does not contain all the boot info needed to make a new HD bootable. :(

Good luck,
The Shadow  8-)

TheShadow,

In this thread we restored partition images to new HDs and booted into WinXP normally.
