I need Help !

I have lenovo T61 (Windows Vista Ultimate 2GB Ram without Ultra Bay) I decideded to upgrade my original hard drive of 80 GB with with a Hitachi Travelstar 250GB hard drive. This was a bare drive.

I loaded the new hard drive in a 2.5" enclosure. With the Norton Ghost 14 installed when I select the option Copy My Hard Drive, NortonGhost is not offering the new Hard Drive as destination.

My Question is
1) Can Norton Ghost 14 clone SATA Drives ?
2) What should I do to clone my existing drive ?

Any help is really appreciated !

Does the external HD show in Disk Management?

How is the enclosure connected to your computer? eSATA or USB? If it's USB, could you let us know the CHS geometry of the HD. Download ptedit32.exe from...

Run the exe (As Administrator) in Windows and let us know the cyl, heads and sectors per track (just to the right of the Hard Disk field at the top of the Window). If you have 240 heads you will have trouble doing a standard clone.

I am using USB to connect the enclosure to my computer.

Oops ! I ran ptedit32.exe it is 240 heads, 10337 Cyl, 63 Sectors per track. So does this mean I cannot do a standard clone. Is there a work around to clone.

If you did a standard clone it's highly likely the new HD wouldn't boot. This is a problem with IBM, HP and Compaq laptops that have 240 heads geometry. No problem for you. Do a reverse clone with the new HD mounted in the laptop and the old HD mounted in the USB enclosure. This way the new HD is seen in its correct geometry during the clone. USB HDs are seen as 255 heads. Ghost 14 can't do a reverse clone but TeraByte's (free) CopyWipe for DOS can.

Use makedisk.exe to create your CD. Boot from the CD and run through the menus. Use the F6 option to View Partitions and confirm you are using the correct HD. You will probably choose the "Scale Size" option rather than Straight Copy. Remember to disconnect the old HD before the first boot from the new HD.

I am not able to clone my SATA drive at all using Norton Ghost 14. The HD. When I use the option Copy My Hard Drive, Norton Ghost is not offering the new Hard Drive as destination.I am not able to select destination with Norton Ghost.

It's fortunate that Ghost 14 won't let you clone because the new HD most likely wouldn't boot because of the geometry issue. Use CopyWipe for DOS.

   I did miss the big one. After getting ready to image with copywipe realized that the external HD did not show up in the Disk Mgmt. Is there any thing I can do to make this showup . Pls help.

Can you hear the HD spinning? Have you checked all the connections? Does the external HD work with other computers?

  Got some mixed news here. After playing around with the usb cord...i was able to find the new HD in disk management. I used copywipe for Dos and copied the source drive to new HD.
  I disconnected my old HD and started with new HD and I got the message
 "Windows failed to Start. A recend Hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
3. Click "Repair your computer."

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer
manufacturer for assistance.

File: \Windows\system32\winload.exe

Status: 0xc0000225

Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is
missing or corrupt."

The problem is Lenovo is saying that I cannot have original windows installation disc and I should use the recovery CDs.The recovery CDs are not giving the option to Repair the computer. Looks like they will set the system to original status.

Have you come across this error. Will another copywipe on the same disk help.
I used the option Scale size with Copywipe

Any help is appreciated.

Sundar,

This error has been reported after the Vista partition has been resized. As you have done (correctly). A BCD Edit should enable your OS to boot.

I'd create a BootIt™ Next Generation CD (trial) and run a BCD Edit.

This post is really really old but just in case someone is having the same problem there is a very simple solution.  Don't worry about all of this fancy copying with Ghost or CopyWipe.  Just image the hard drive. I usually image the current hard drive to an extra drive, then dump the image onto the hard drive i'm moving to.  If you don't have that (an extra hard drive) create a partition on one of your drives and image to that (GParted is a good utility for this).
