Title: Ghost 2002_WinXP_v-e-r-y slow to create image Post by kidney on Jan 13th, 2002 at 3:40pm
Question. WinXP with 2 physical HDD's. Creating .gho image from c:\ to d:\ (primary master to primary slave).
C:\ is ~5gb of data. When I start imaging process, Ghost statistics screen shows 4300mb of data transferring at a rate about 10 mb/second taking 4 hours or so. Using 'normal' compression. Seems way too slow. What is a normal transfer rate on local machine using Ghost, from 1 physical HDD to another. How long should I expect ~5gb of data to ghost? Does this appear to be a problem with my local machine's HDD's talking to each other or is this normal. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks. |

correction: (4300mb of data transferring at a rate about 10 mb/second). I meant 10mb/min... then slows down to around 8mb/min... taking hours! to complete.

Something is wrong.
It takes me ~5 minutes to image ~2.5GB of data (WinME + apps) to another SCSI drive on FAST compression (500MB/min SCSI-to-SCSI). Takes me ~12 minutes to image ~4GB of data (Win2K + apps) to an IDE drive (333MB/min imaging SCSI-to-IDE). The SCSI drive images ~50% faster than the IDE (both FAST compression). |

So, compared to what should be normal expected behavior for Ghost transfer rate from 1 ide hdd to 2nd ide hdd on local machine.... this appears to be a local machine performance issue as opposed to expected behavior for Ghost. Any ideas as to why transfer rate is so slow? Almost as if it is a local disk caching issue, sort-of like when smartdrv.exe is not loaded. Thanks.

Never heard of your problem. Try Symantec:
http://servicenews.symantec.com/cgi-bin/browse.cgi?group=symantec.support.network.ghost2002.general' If/when you find a solution, lemme know & I'll include it the the Ghost guide. Rad |

Thanks for your help. Went to Symantec site per your suggestion and they said:
"Try running Ghost with the following switches: ghostpe.exe -fna -fnu The -fna switch turns off Ghost ability to read from the source and write to the destination at the same time. So Ghost reads and then writes. The -fnu switch tells Ghost not to read through UDMA and instead will read through PIO. That greatly improved performance. Ghost copied ~5gb at 85mb/min taking about 45 min. to complete. Not sure if that is 'all that fast' for ide to ide but it worked for me! Knowing I have an image to back-up from is great piece of mind. Thank you for your suggestions! |

Cool.
I update the guide to include your info. On this page: http://ghost.radified.com/ghost_1y.htm .. ~ 2/3rds the ways down. Thx for contributing. Rad |
