Title: Scsi Guru Needed Post by calculated_risk on Jan 16th, 2004 at 9:07pm
I have been searching for a solution to a particular problem. I am running a couple of scsi drives with IDE storage. A recently purchased IBM scsi drive(DDYS-T09170) is not accessable anymore. When I first installed it, I could access it with my setting the ID to whatever I pleased. I am using an Adaptec 2940UW adapter. Whenever I go into the adapter bios config now and try to access it by either verifying disk or format disk , I get the error as follows:
Target Scsi ID 0 / Scsi CDB Sent 03 00 00 00 0E 00 70 00 02 00 / Host Adapter Status 02h-No Host adapter error / Target Status 02h-Check Condition / Sense Key - 02h -Not Ready / Sense Code - 04h / Sense Code Qualifier - 00h Now I can plug in the other scsi drive (Fujitsu ) and it works perfectly. I also notice at bootup , the working drive displays as foolows: Scsi ID: Lun 0:0 Fujitsu (model) Drive 83h And when I try the IBM drive on bootup it reads the ID Lun ,, Ibm DDYS T09170 , but the drive 83h part is missing. Obviously, I have fouled up the drive # setting. I have tried several jumpers on the drive to reset the drive , such as disable unit attention. I know that the termination and ID settings are correct. At this point however , I am at a loss as how to procede to reset the drive . I am trying not to do further damage. Any help is genuinely appreciated. |

could be numerous things.
have u verified that the drive is not dying? ibm had a problem with drives dying prematurely. i had a couple go bad myself. (now I buy cheetahs or quantum atlas's) anyway, i don't have time to troubleshoot the problem with you, so i suggest you post your question here: http://forums.storagereview.net/ and here: http://www.storageforum.net/forum/ good guys hang out there. just copy + paste your post from here. what was the last thing you did before you had the problem? in othert words, is it self-induced? or is the drive dying? ibm has a diagnostic utility you can download. they were bought out. the new company should have the same utility. i like your user name: calculated_risk .. the story of my life. :) |

Thx for the quick response Radman ! After reading some faq on the Adaptec site, I lean towards it being self-induced. However , I don't fully remember exactly what I did to cause it. IF, I killed the power or reset during a low-level format then I guess I will use it for target practice ! Thanks for the links. At this point after my reads, the solution may prove futile.

You did a low-level format?
Those are usually bad. I've heard of others having trouble after LL-formatting their drive. did u have trouble with the log-in? I noticed that you registered, but logged in as guest. |

Honestly , I don't recall if I LL formated. I may have fdisked it , which could be as bad, by overwriting any disk system info. I think that I logged in as guest and then registered and didn't re-log in . I also posted at the mentioned site. I have that funny feeling that I will be shopping soon for a new drive. What are your views on buying used (E-bay) scsi drives.

I've never bought a used drive off ebay. I have heard of a couple of people doing do and having problems. Obviously, your milage will vary.
If you only have a an UW controller, you're limited. Consider this one, for US$38: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=16-118-009&catalog=73&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=1 http://www.lsilogic.com/products/ultra160_host_bus_adapters/lsiu160_b.html http://www.newegg.com/app/Showimage.asp?image=16-118-009-02.JPG/16-118-009-03.JPG http://secure.newegg.com/app/CustratingReview.asp?item=16-118-009 http://radified.com/Articles/rad_rig_2003.htm I like the Seagte Cheetah 15K.3, or the Quantum Atles 10K IV. Surely, you've seen the "leaderboard" at Storage review. |

Hey Radmin, I am thinking of a 160 controller now. But what are the compatability issues with using the following devices.
http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/suppedindexprod.html?sess=no&language=English+US&cat=%2fProduct%2fAHA-2940UW with http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/manuals/scsi/29260b.pdf Will I need to get this :http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2780191588&category=44960 or this http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2779906284&category=11160 or should I splurge for this adapter combined with the converter? I don't have a backplane. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2781195042&category=39969 I did the stupid thing and purchased the Seagate drive without realizing that it was a 80 pin LVD. I also noticed that there are no pci adapters available for 80 pin. Will the converter work and what type cable (ribbon or twisted pair) should I be using. Thanks again for the support. |

adaptec 29160, your last link, for $10, is a great deal. i would snap it up, pronto.
scsi is backward-compatible by definition. newer is almost always better. since the pci bus is limited, ultra320 is mostly a waste. but you would be able to put u160 to good use. you are now at uw, which = 40 (33 actual, after taking into account 'housekeeping' overhead) so, moving up to u160, you would be moving up 2 generations (u2w = 80) |
