Title: Norton Ghost 2003 Update
Post by clevelandtxus on Jan 23rd, 2004 at 6:02am
Symantec has upgraded Norton Ghost 2003.  After you run liveupdate go to your folder where Ghost is installed and read the readme.txt file to view the changes.

Norton Ghost 2003 Update 3 - January 6 2004

Caution: Norton Ghost 2003 is a powerful utility program that performs complex operations on your computer. Use this product carefully as some operations are data destructive.

List of changes in Norton Ghost 2003 Update 3

Improved Disk Drive Overlay (DDO) support
-----------------------------------------
Support for users with Disk Drive Overlays has been improved in this release. If you are using Norton Ghost 2003 from a boot disk, and your hard drive came with a DDO loading disk, we still recommend that you use this to load the DDO before using Ghost.

Restoring NTFS images with very fragmented or compressed files
--------------------------------------------------------------
A fix is included for the problem of corrupted MFT when you  restore NTFS images with very fragmented or compressed files. This includes the -ntexact command-line switch. See Section 6, Additional switches.

Updated Linux boot loader support
---------------------------------
The Linux boot loader support has been updated to support newer versions of LILO, and to support GRUB.

Location of virtual partition
-----------------------------
The virtual partition cannot be located beyond the accessible section of the HD, which could prevent an older machine from starting the operating system in some cases.

Install Ghost to a friend's computer who has an internet connection?

Write to Symantec and ask them to send you the update?

There's a better solution. You can download the updates for manual install by first installing the "luau.exe" tool--the administrative distribution utility--from Symantec. I found that I had to run it TWICE, but you can download the updates. I ended up with two stand-alone files:

ng2003b789_en.x86
ng2003b793_en.x86

You can also retrieve them from Princeton University's server:
http://pcsystems.princeton.edu/nav/

Still trying to figure out how to install these buggers. Anyone?!?

What is the date of the upgrade and version number? Sounds like one needs to make a new set of bootable disks for newer version.

Edit: Nevew mind, I just realized this was old news, circa 12/2003.

In reference to manually updating Ghost 2003:

It CAN be done.

I was not able to get live update to work.  Maybe Symantec's server was down or since this is an older product it is no longer supported.  However after installing the *huge* Ghost 9.0, I got second thoughts because I have read of people having problems cloning a new HDD (thats what I need it for) entirely from within windows.  Since the registry is constantly
updating, my limited experience tells me the "virtual partition" (seaprate OS from the drive you want to clone) may be a better way.

I got these from the Princeton server:

ng2003b789_en.x86
ng2003b793_en.x86

http://pcsystems.princeton.edu/nav/

They are nothing more than .zip files without the extension.  Rename them with a .zip extension and they will open in Winzip.

The 793 update has all the files (newer versions) than the
789 update except one. Extract all the files to a temp folder.
You can use the "ghostlu.exe" file which will copy the files to your ghost program folder, or you can manually copy the files.  That's all the ghostlu.exe does.

WARNING:  Before doing this, you must exit ghost, AND end its process(s) in Task Manager. There is a .dll file, "vpartition.dll" , among others which will not copy if it is locked or in use by a process.  However there is one process which I could not end in Task Manager even though I was not running ghost, a background process which loads on bootup.

PC mag has a utility "Enditall" which gives you complete control over running processes, and which will allow you to kill all the ghost programs.  I used it successfully to end what Task manager refused to.  (don't do this if Ghost is running).

Then copy over the files from the update .zips to your Ghost program folder.  There was one file in the 789 update which was missing from the 793, in any case I just made sure I copied over (overwrite) the files with the most recent dates.

Then you need to reboot the PC so the background ghost processes will start with the new files.

Hope this helps! ;D

bump,  (a year latter)

ng2003b789_en.x86
ng2003b793_en.x86

I know it may be a lost cause..
but I’m desperate to find the above files.

I’m bit annoyed that I could not "save" the live updates to a CD.
Now Symantec has stopped support for Ghost 2003, live update states Ghost 2003 is up-to-date. Not!  My version is 2003.775.

Really hope someone out there has these files available *crosses fingers

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the prompt replies.  :D

I was able to D/L the ng2003b789_en.x86 file – Thanks again for the link.
If only I could get the ng2003b793_en.x86 file, things may begin to look promising.

Now the only frustration I have (besides not able to enforce world peace and the other ng2003b793_en.x86 file) is…
Live update was a simple procedure. I would click on a button and it did the rest.
Now it looks like I have to Rename, Search for directories, Write over the top of un-erasable files, Tap my head and rub my tummy all at the same time so I get the latest version of Ghost 2003.

Wouldn’t it be nice if Norton would have made it one downloadable file? Something like their virus definitions files.

thanks and t.i.e.

deepstar in reply #5 in the link above says that if you have build 789 installed, then LiveUpdate will work and update to 793.

Have you tried that--does it still work--or is that posting no longer valid?

Title: Re: Norton Ghost 2003 Update
Post by critter748 on Jan 4th, 2007 at 2:04am
These were the steps I took only to get to version 789.

Downloaded the ng2003b789_en.x86 file and renamed it to ng2003b789_en.zip

unzip file,

Restart PC in safe mode,

Checked to see GhostStartService.exe was not running in Task Manager.

Copied all files including 2 hidden files from the unzipped file to
C:\Program Files\Symantec\Norton Ghost 2003
(9 were overwritten and 4 placed in directory)

Restarted the PC

Checked version number - version is now .789

Click on Live update, and the following message is displayed..
"Thank you for using live update all the Symantec products and components are currently up to date. Remember to check for new updates frequently."

Clicked on Live update a couple of times and the same message...

So, although in a sense I was able to "patch" Ghost 2003 to version 789 it still not the latest.
Fancy having to “patch” a program like Ghost in this manner.
I wonder why an official patch was not released?

Again, thanks for the prompt reply.   :D

jrobin9,
thanks for the links, both zip-archives are downloaded to my hard disk.

I compared the files in ng2003b789_en with the files in 1122653960jtun_ng2003b789_en and all but one seem to be identical. The one that differs is ng2003upd2.dis.

From ng2003b789_en:

Quote:
LAUNCHEX([Norton Ghost],GhostStartService.exe,"/UnregServer", 1)
LAUNCH(TempDir, ghostlu.exe, , 1)
LAUNCHEX([Norton Ghost],GhostStartService.exe,"/Service", 1)
LAUNCHEX([Norton Ghost],GhostStartTrayApp,"", 1)

From 1122653960jtun_ng2003b789_en:

Quote:

LAUNCH(TempDir, ghostlu.exe, , 1)
LAUNCHEX([Norton Ghost],GhostStartService.exe,"/Service", 1)
LAUNCH([Norton Ghost],GhostStartTrayApp.exe,"", 0)

I wonder what the significance is?

(The corresponding file in 1122653960jtun_ng2003b793_en is identical to the one in 1122653960jtun_ng2003b789_en.)

I don't have any of those two files on my system updated through LiveUpdate when it still worked.

There are files in the zip-archives that do not exist on my system:

In 1122653960jtun_ng2003b789_en:
ASPI1394.SYS (hidden)
ASPIEHCI.SYS (hidden)
ghostlu.exe
ghostlu.ini
ng2003upd2.dis

In 1122653960jtun_ng2003b793_en:
ghostlu.exe
ghostlu.ini
ng2003upd3.dis

The two missing (on my system) *.SYS files are strange.

ghostlu.exe and ghostlu.ini may be what is needed to get LiveUpdate to work for Ghost 2003?

To all, I found the answer, and it's pretty easy once you know what to do.  After much experimentation and Googling, in the end I just uninstalled Ghost 2003 and then uninstalled LiveUpdate (which was left behind for my NAV installation).  I think this last part was the key.  Note:  I did not have to uninstall NAV, so that was nice.

I then downloaded the latest LiveUpdate version from Symantec's site (reads 3.2.0.43 in the About screen).  It adds a select field for two LiveUpdate Locations:  SYMANTEC-LIVE and SYMANTEC-ARCHIVE.  My prior version of LiveUpdate didn't have this.

I reinstalled Ghost 2003 from the CD, and then ran LiveUpdate twice, choosing the SYMANTEC-ARCHIVE location each time.  The first update upgraded me to build 789 (from 775).  Running LiveUpdate a second time installed the 793 build.  BTW, this PC is running Win2K SP4 as it's an older PC but still has a lot of life left.  8)

Here's where I found the information that gave me the idea.  By the way, following the instructions below did NOT solve the problem for me, as it didn't properly replace my LiveUpdate.  I also did NOT have to replace the LiveUpdate Hosts file.

Interestingly, the Hosts file that came with the new LiveUpdate version had two locations, whereas the Hosts file reference in the last link below has something like 4 or 5 LiveUpdate locations.

For whatever reason, I didn't have the right version of LiveUpdate, even though I saw it come down as part of my NAV updates recently.

See:
http://tinyurl.com/ouyco, which took me to:
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/sharedtech.nsf/docid/2007010219171513

Hope this helps someone else avoid losing several hours chasing this down like I did.  Perhaps I didn't need to uninstall Ghost 2003, but I wanted to start fresh and clear out its product information in LiveUpdate before replacing LiveUpdate.

Note that the Symantec website lists version 3.2.0.41 of LiveUpdate (release date of January 6, 2007) as being the most current.

I do not see an option in this version to choose a LiveUpdate location (SYMANTEC-LIVE or SYMANTEC-ARCHIVE).

HECK YES!   ;D

It worked just as described!  Thank you, ghostuser!

Of note, I did not have to uninstall Ghost.  In fact, it wouldn't work at all without Ghost installed.  The script just generated an error trying to run LiveUpdate since there was nothing to update.  My only Norton/Symantec product is Ghost 2003, and LiveUpdate is built right into it - i.e. LiveUpdate doesn't stand alone and so far as I know could only be run from within Ghost.

If you are trying this by simply updating LiveUpdate and then trying to run LiveUpdate as a separate app, this may not work.  It seems you actually have to launch LiveUpdate from the button on the Symantec page, which runs something different.  The drop-down box to select SYMANTEC-ARCHIVE is there.  Running the update once gave me version 789, and running it again gave me 793.

I'll be RARing those away for safe keeping ....

I downloaded and installed version 3.2.0.43 of LiveUpdate, released Feb 1 but not mentioned on the Symantec site. As Pleonasm noted, there is no SYMANTEC-LIVE or SYMANTEC-ARCHIVE choice. Probably because we don't have Ghost 2003 installed. Interesting.

You must be doing something wrong - you have the exact same situation/setup as me.

Let me stress again, you should NOT run LiveUpdate from within one of your apps or whatever.  You should launch it using the ActiveX controls on the very same page you used for updating.

Thanks  ghostuser - your suggestions above works.  ;D

I also decided to start from the beginning. Dumped a image of Windows XP sp2 pro and then installed Ghost 2003 from the CD (v775)…  it was time for a clean up anyways…  :-X

Proceeded to installed Live Update v300171.

Followed by the LiveUpdate SETTINGS FILE – taking note exactly of the naming, location and file type of this.

I was not able to run the LiveUpdate from the website, instead I ran LiveUpdate from -
C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\LUALL.EXE
and selected SYMANTEC-ARCHIVE from the drop down menu.

After the 2nd update, Ghost 2003 is now at v793

Where does LiveUpdate store the downloaded files?  I would like to save them on a CD for future use?.  ???

Cheers

I want to share my experience with this. I had purchased in the past Ghost 2003 and the version on the retail CD was 775. When I decided to reinstall everything on my PC running XP (...the reason was SP2 that f****d up all my applications) I found out that Ghost would not update. I turned to Symantec for help and they could not provide nothing. The "tech representative" that I spent time talking to an exchanging e-mails did not have even 5% of the technical knowledge an average user has. He just kept repeating (like a damn idiot...) "if LiveUpdate does not work we cannot help you...You have to try again..." but without even providing the smallest clue on what to do. What I finally did, since I ACTUALLY HAD updated to level 793 before this incredible BS appeared, was to find an actual EARLIER DVD Ghost image of my hard disk that contained the 793 update and search one by one ALL the Ghost files to locate the ones that had newer dates and then replace them one by one. This is what I call "Great Service" from Symantec. You buy the software but if you actually intend to re-install it in the future the reply is a polite:
"F**k you very much!! Buy the newer version, sucker!!!"
Absolute disgrace!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello to everybody,
Ive been Ghost user since 2005 and I wish to thank those who wrote the previous postings on how to get the latest of Ghost 2003. I just would like to share my own experience here. I have Symantec antivirus (SAV) with liveupdate version 3.0 and also Ghost 2003.775. Well, to update Ghost i tried the link given in the forum:

http://service1.symantec.com/Support/sharedtech.nsf/docid/2007010219171513

It installed a symantec web update utility "autofix" but on running the latter, my laptop just hanged up. I reboot and tried again but with the same result. So then I looked for a more recent version of liveupdate and I found one version: 3.2.0.43 free on the web. I installed it and could now see the "use location profile" : Symantec-live or Symantec-archive. It's great as I could use the "live" to update my anivirus and "archive" to update my Ghost. Before installing the new liveupdate, i didn't uninstall my old version 3.0 . The files just got overwritten in the installation process.

As mentioned earlier by one posting, the first update with symantec-archive updates the Ghost to 2003.789 and on the second update we get the 2003.793 version.

At the Dos prompt, on executing "ghost -ver" my version now reads:

Norton Ghost 2003 <build=793, cdrlib=3.1.25>

Also now I got these (around) 3 MB each files:

1165278149jtun_ng2003b789_en.x86.full.zip

1165278149jtun_ng2003b793_en.x86.full.zip

Does anyone know what the numbers 1165278149 stand for?

I'm happy if I'm able to help someone out there just as this forum helped me to get the latest 2003 version.

Looks like a classic UNIX timestamp to me - that corresponds to 5th December 2006 or thereabouts.

The date on that file doesn't correspond to anything much that I can think of, and it's probably not there for any particular reason other than to ensure that the names are unique. Probably whenever files are archived by the LiveUpdate team, they are moved by some automated process someone wrote that sticks the date on the front of the filename.

Incidentally, UNIX timestamps turn up all over the place. Quote a message here on this forum, and look closely at the quote tag - the one at the top of this message has "quote author=blackeagle link=1074852133/30#36 date=1187340086", which is the date as I'm writing this encoded in exactly the same way.
