Title: How to partition a USB 2.0 hard drive?
Post by NightOwl on Jul 13th, 2004 at 11:24am
To all

How do you access a USB 2.0 hard drive under DOS in order to use FDisk or Partition Magic to repartition it.

The drive does not appear under DOS as there are no USB drivers for normal DOS.  The drive shows up fine when using Ghost with USB support, and shows up fine under Windows.

How do I get USB support for other DOS functions for the USB hard drive?

I only use Maxtor and Seagate internal IDE HDDs mounted in external HDD enclosure kits via USB 2.0.  I have no experience with purpose-built external HDDs at all.

Although I use both FDisk and Partition Magic 8.0 with my external HDDs, I am forced to temporarily mount the IDE HDDs internally for FDisk procedures and for those PM tasks that have the asterisk noted signifying a reboot in DOS.  If you can ascertain how to do such tasks in DOS while remaining connected to USB, I will be doubly delighted.

Most people use Windows disk management, but if you want to use dos or fdisk, i think you have to set your motherboard bios to enable "legacy usb support" so it work in dos.

Thanks for your response (this is belated  :) ) .

I tried WinXP's disk management and it worked, but when I tried format, it would only let me use NTFS and not FAT 32.

And unfortunately, the usb legacy support (at least on my system) applied to mouse and keyboard only--it did not allow the USB HDD to be used under DOS.

I have done some research and testing, and have posted a USB DOS driver that works for Ghost, PartitionMagic, and DOS's Fdisk on my system here:
