Title: Ghost RIS Boot issue
Post by morleyz on Apr 28th, 2005 at 5:26pm
I'm using RIS to boot machines from PXE in order to clone driveless notebooks.  In the past I was using GhostWalk to perform a SID change on the notebook after cloning.  This works great off of floppy and boot CD, but when Ghost finishes the clone off a network book, the boot disk give me:

General Failure reading drive M

Temporarily I've setup a 2nd RIS boot disk to just run GhostWalk, but I'd like to get this down to one step.

Does anyone have any idea why the network boot disk becomes inaccessible after cloning?

RIS - Remote Installation Services
Windows service used to deploy OSs.

PXE - Portable eXecution Environment
ROM based boot protocol for booting directly off a network.

Best way that I've found is to run SETUPMGR to specify settings (leave computer name blank), then "SYSPREP -mini" on the system before you make an image out of it, then once you've ghosted the system via RIS it will prompt you for the computer name and domain on the first boot of the ghosted system.  Play around with the settings inside SETUPMGR and you'll see all of the fun you can have with sysprep and ghost together.
