Title: Ghost not displaying "SOURCE"
Post by Valerie Mark on May 19th, 2005 at 7:18pm
Hello, I am having a problem with Norton Ghost 2003.  When I get to the step in the back-up wizard to select a source to backup there is nothing listed in the "source" pane.  I have emailed Norton support but all they did was send me directions on how to use the backup wizard! I know how to use it but there is nothing listed in the source pane to backup. Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks, Val

Try using the DOS interface with a Ghost boot floppy diskette.

How many hard drives do yoiu have in your computer?

How many partitions on each hard drive?

Are you selecting "partion to image" or "disk to image"?

NTFS versus FAT32 file system formatting, I suspect.  Norton Ghost 2003 very congenial to FAT32, but somewhat less with NTFS.

1.  If you can, make a Standard Ghost Boot Floppy and re-boot to DOS and let Ghost start with that boot disk.  Once into the DOS Ghost interface, select Drive-To Image, and when you get the 'Select Source' option, is your HDD listed there as a source?

2.  When first booting your system--hit 'Delete' key (works for most systems--if not yours, see how to enter BIOS during boot-up for your particular system) to enter your BIOS.  Find the setup page that lists the HDD's and make sure your HDD is listed there.

The usual setting you want is 'Auto Detect' or something to that effect.

Results?

I tried to make a Standard Ghost Boot Floppy using the Boot Wizard but got an error that says "The detination file A:\IBMBIO.com could not be opened for writing - check the destination drive - the error number returnd was 27"

Did you check the BIOS for proper listing of your HDD at boot-up?

Results?

I can not find that specific error message, but you could try adding MS-DOS files to Ghost's Boot Wizard, and then selecting MS-DOS for the files system to use for creating the boot disk instead of the default PC-DOS boot files to see if that solves the problem.

You need a Win98se boot disk in order to add those to the Ghost Wizard.  I use the Win98se OEM version from BootDisk.com:

Bootdisk.com

Win98se OEM Boot Disk Download

Use the 'boot98.exe' file to create the boot floppy.

Open Ghost's Boot Wizard, select Standard Boot Disk, next screen--do not select any added drivers, next screen select 'Get MS-DOS' option, make sure the floppy disk is in the drive, and continue.

Continue with creating the boot floppy, but select 'Use MS-DOS' now.

Did it work?
