Title: Cell Phone Tracing on GSM Networks
Post by Arsenist on Sep 8th, 2005 at 11:46pm
Hey guys, does anyone know if it's possible to trace mobile phones on the GSM network? Or any other networks? Is there any software out there that helps you do this?
In the movies when the authorities hold the line open long enough they're able to trace the location of the phone. Is this something that only the authorities can do or can we do it too?
I'm really keen on learning how to do this. If anyone has any advice or guidance please post back here!

Thanks

You have to have the cooperation of the phone company to trace calls like they do in the movies.

Most cell phones made these days can transmit their general GPS location to the person they are calling.  Due to obvious privacy concerns, most phones are configured to only transmit that information when calling an emergency number like 911, but it is usually user configurable.

Arsenist, you may be interested in the SecurePhone product, if privacy is your concern.
