Title: SATA HDD's and Ghost!
Post by NightOwl on Sep 23rd, 2005 at 11:06am
To All

For some time now, there have been posts here about problems when using SATA HDD with Ghost in DOS.

I do not have SATA HDD's and add-on controller cards, nor a motherboard with integrated SATA, so I have no personal experience.

But one poster here in the forum--some time ago--was trouble shooting a SATA problem and there was mention of setting(s) in the BIOS--something to the effect of *lacacy* HDD compatibility.

Well, I've mentioned it to a number of posters since, but no one has ever confirmed that such setting(s) exist--or if changing them helps.

But I found the following thread--it was started on July 4, 2004, and has posters up to the present--it's a good read if you have SATA HDD's and are having Ghost problems!

Norton Ghost Sata problems

Edit by NightOwl--the above link appears to be *dead*--a summary of the solutions can be found here: Re: Bootable cd without floppy

Hope this helps someone out there  ;) !

Do you think we should make this sticky? I am kinda on this 'sticky' kick. But you can only have a limited number of sticky threads, or they lose their importance.

As a moderator, I think you have ability to stick-i-fy threads, yes?

I thought about making this topic *sticky*--but, I wasn't too sure if it had broad enough application to warrant it.

I was going to see if anyone found it helpful, and then just monitor posts and refer folks as needed.

But, won't hurt to be sticky for awhile, and then turn it loose.

Maybe mentioning it in an appropriate place in your Ghost Guide would make sense, as well.

Serious!  It would be nice to get a summary of the 12 pages of repetitive, sometimes childish, occasionally spammed, maddening thread.

I almost went blind trying to figure out what I needed.  Still haven't succeded.

From what I can gather, Ghost freezes on boot with some SATA hard drives.  The problem can be fixed by changing a setting in BIOS or by running Ghost with a switch.

It seems to vary by computer and BIOS version which fix works best and what the setting in BIOS is called.  The two switches everyone keeps saying worked are -NOIDE or -fni.

The topic got out of contol and off topic before I could get much more than that out of it.  Can anyone else decipher  anything more?
