Hi there, I have had a problem for ages and just stumbled across this forum which appears to have a lot of knowledgable people on the subject of Ghost! Anyways, my problem is this.....

I have ghost working perfectly (boot into Ghost via Dos-make backups to an external usb drive) on newer dell machines which have USB 2 controllers. My problem is the company still have lots of older machine which have no usb 2 controllers. I have read many various threads on boot disks for USB 1.1 support etc and have followed many of them. However I still have the same problem. When I boot into Ghost, there is no selection available for my External USB Hard drive.

The model of my drive is a western digital dual option combo 320gb. Can anybody provide me with a step by step guide of enabling this disk to work in Ghost. I have also upgraded my BIOS to the latest setting.

So, the laptops have USB 1.1--I'm assuming?

Have you used the Norton Ghost Boot Wizard and selected USB 1.1 drivers?

If *Yes* to the above, then your external HDD may not be compatible with the Ghost USB DOS driver (created by Iomega).

You could try an alternate USB DOS driver:

A Better USB 2.0 DOS Driver for Ghost + More!

Current available Panasonic USB DOS drivers are:

v2.06, size=37,903, dated 11/26/2002

v2.15, size=39,093, dated 10/26/2003

v2.20, size=39,179, dated 11/07/2004

Firstly, the desktops (not laptops) I am trying to use all have 1.1 USB only on them. They do not have any usb 2 hosts or controllers. I have tried the boot wizard with 1.1 support selected with no joy.

My personal belief was the drive isnt compatible with the Iomega driver too. As such I was looking through the thread you pointed me too.

I was under the impression that I would definitely need a 1.1 driver though and not a USB 2 DOS driver. Could you clarify this?

Oftentimes, DOS-based Norton Ghost 2003 has all kinds of problems with USB 2.0 host controller software or USB 2.0 device controller software that is not NEC-compliant.  Substituting NEC-compliant USB 2.0 hardware with concomitant software drivers usually resolves the matter - although adopting NightOwl's Panasonic Universal USB Driver routine is the cheaper and quicker approach to attain the same goal if you already have the hardware.

Providing you have available PCI slots on each desktop PC, CLICK HERE to check out a NEC-compliant PCI-to-USB host adapter card at a modest price (host controller software is included, though you probably will not need it).

product.

If I:
- open this old Windows 98 (FIRST EDITION) box
- install this PCI USB card
- attach an enclosure containing a <32GB drive
would you PREDICT success.
I'm not asking for a guarantee.  I'm request a guess based on your experience.  Would you be optimistic?

If the PC were to have a free PCI slot and the OS were Windows 98 Second Edition, then I would consider success virtually certain.  However, with 98 First Edition I must confess having neither experience nor hearsay to reveal - neither positive nor negative.
