Title: Updating ghost image
Post by Jim Gronquist on Jan 31st, 2006 at 11:50am
I have created many working images.I've noticed that when MS releases patches, my images immediatly become obsolete. Is it possible to update an image as new patches are available, rather than recreating the whole image?

I'm guessing here, but I suspect you are using Ghost 2003.

If your partitions are FAT 32, I think you can use Ghost Explorer to *add files* to an existing Ghost image--NTFS partitions will not allow that functionality.

But, you would have to know what files were changed by the update, plus all the possible registry changes, and backing that up *completely* as well.

If using Ghost 9.x or 10.x--then it's *incremental* backups should be taking care of that issue for you--and if those versions of Ghost think too many changes have occurred since the last full backup--it will default to a full backup instead of an incremental.

Jim, with Ghost 9/Ghost 10 you can, of course, create an incremental recovery point (i.e., image) that will capture all updates to Windows.  Personally, I create an independent recovery point (i.e., baseline image) to backup my system once a week, and save all updates to my application data files (e.g., “\My Documents\*.*”) daily using the DataProtector service (http://onlinebackup.connected.com/index.asp).

From a practical perspective, installing updates to Windows is typically not a large problem.  Therefore, in the worse case scenario, you can restore an “out-of-date” image and simply run Windows Update.

The Symantec LiveState Patch Manager (http://www.symantec.com/Products/enterprise?c=prodinfo&refId=925) may be of interest, too.

I would be safe & create a new image. Doesn't take very long. Do it before bed if time is an issue, or while you're in the krapper.

Plus, those old images aren't "obsolete". If restored, you would simply re-update Windows .. takes only a few minutes.

The #1 thing you want to be sensitive to is the integrity (and restorability) of your images. Everything else (in importance) comes after.

But I admit to being paranoid about my images. If you've ever had a problem with a restore, you know why.
