In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, I did manage to scoop up two Seagate HDDs (a 120GB IDE and a 160GB NCQ SATA) for spares from Outpost.com (while enjoying their incredible "kick-ass" MIRs) as two of my desktop PCs suffered saltwater immersion which required MASTER HDD replacement - facilitated by Norton Ghost 2003 restorations, I might add.

Ongoing - and seemingly never-ending - recovery efforts from the storm have since resulted in three out of four of my desktop PCs - plus my notebook PC - being relegated to "deep mothball" status. Regrettably, all serious PC upgrades have been placed on indefinite hold for me and mine.  The above posts serve as no more than a vicarious pleasure, so to speak.

CLICK HERE for link to Seagate IDE (PATA) 250GB HDD with 16MB cache mounting two platters of 133GB each - not the typical three - for under $70.00 delivered (after MIR).  Moreover, it would be better suited for mounting in an external enclosure kit than large capacity HDDs with more than two platters - particularly for those kits which rely on passive cooling.

Pardon me for jumping in on your sale thread, Pesky.

I finally updated my old (new in 2001) computer's bios to a version that supports 48 bit LBA.  So, I think I'm good to go with a large HDD.

To that end, I was looking to see if the Seagate was still on sale.  Currently, it's not.

BUT!  Poking around the site, I found another.  It's a 300 GB Seagate IDE (PATA) HDD with the 16 MB cache for the low price of $49.99 after rebates.  Ships free, also.  Looks like a square deal.

I realize that the price borders on the incredible, but such offers are typical for Outpost.com (Fry's Electronics).  Their turnaround on Mail-In Rebates is unbelievably fast, and I have received nothing but superb service from them on all counts.

The Seagate IDE (PATA) 250GB HDD with 16MB cache mounts two platters of 133GB each, while the 300GB counterpart almost certainly has the typical three of 100GB each.  I would prefer two platters to three for a HDD to be installed in an external enclosure kit - particularly for those kits which rely on passive cooling - but in normal circumstances you will never know the difference.
