Title: new to Unix
Post by astro on Feb 27th, 2006 at 2:50am
Hello everyone.  I need a procedure outlining how to install freebsd or solaris 10. What I mean is which iso file do I download and how do I get that onto a cd so I can install it on a different PC
Thanks

Astro

I assume you are installing this on a standard PC.  I only quailify it becasue  you mentioned Solaris, which, until very recently, required the SPARC platform (incompatible with the ever so popular IBM format.)

If you are installing it on a PC, then look for the x86 version.

FreeBSD is available from this link:
http://www.freebsd.org/where.html

Get the i386 iso version.

Solaris 10 is available from this Link:
https://www.sun.com/download/sdl.jsp?5005588c-36f3-11d6-9cec-fc96f718e113=1

You will have to register.

Once you have the file, burn it onto a CD.  You will want to burn it as an image, not a file.  For example, with Nero, you would find the option that says "Burn image to disk" and then browse to and select the .iso image you downloaded.

Installing is another affair.  If you have never used Unix, then I suggest you start with FreeBSD.  BSD has been free for a long time, and there is more community support.  Solaris was exclusive to Sun Microsystems until very recently, so most of the support you are going to get on Solaris still has to come from Sun.  Here is a link on how to install FreeBSD:

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/faq/install.html

Good luck.  Unix is a great operating system.
