Title: Windows stuck logging in
Post by HariV on Mar 23rd, 2006 at 3:43am
Hi and thanks for having this amazing forum ... I wonder if someone might be able to help me with this problem:-

I have a PC which is stuck when loading windows at the following point: After the screen where the user names come up, when you enter the name and password (there are 2 users and it does the sme for both), it says "loading your personal settings" then either sticks there or goes to the next screen which is just a blue screen and sticks there.

It stays at those points maybe 5 - 10 mins by which time I lose hope and restart the PC and the same thing happens.

Might be useful to know that this PC has the blue screen of death appear maybe once a week. However I reinstalled the OS (XP pro) on Sunday so managed to get three day's trouble-free use out of it!

Many thanks in advance...
HariV

I had a good look there but unfortunately didn't find much to help.  I am not stuck in an endless reboot cycle, but the PC sticks after the log on screen.

Is there any way to disable this option to log in different users and force the administrator or main user to log in automatically - in case this is the problem?

When you reinstalled the OS on Sunday, did you completely reformat your hard drive first?  Or just install on top of the problem?

If it's serious enough to require a reinstall, you should erase or reformat your hard drive, and then reinstall.

What were the error codes on the blue screen? Did you look those up with Google or at microsoft.com?  They usually tell you the cause.  Also, did you look at the System event log?  my computer/right click/manage/event log.  It also tells you the cause of the problems or gives you clues as to where to start.

When Windows first starts to boot up (while the screen is still black but BIOS has finished all its checks), press F8 to get advanced boot up options.  Choose "Safe Mode" and see if that will boot.

If safe mode won't work after you have reformatted and done a clean install, I'm tempted to blame either your memory or your hard drive.  You could download diagnostic tools from your hard drive manufacturer and use them to make sure your hard drive is still in good shape.

I can't seem to get WinXP to install onto a partition made using FDISK so now I just boot from the XP disk and use the formatting and partitioning features there. I hope that's a completely fresh install. Certainly I have to reinstall all the drivers etc. and SP2. and windows updates.

I didn't record the message on the BSoD.

What I did was restore a ghosted image of the C drive from a recent backup and hey presto it works. The log in problem has vanished but you still get the BSoD every now and then. I'll take note of what it says next time.

Thanks
Hari

Tried that F8 just took me to a black screen of inactivity with "safe mode" in each corner!

I am inclined to think it's a hardware problem too.

I restored C from a recent ghost backup and it's fine now apart from the occasional BSoD!

Thanks
