Title: Swap GHOST 2003.exe with GHOST9.0 in bootable CD
Post by swellthekitty on Aug 24th, 2006 at 4:24pm
Aloha all -

Just want to say thanks to nightwolf and Rad for the awesome instructions on creating a bootable ghost cd without the floppy drive.

My system crapped out on me recently - corrupt or missing system file...blah blah blah.
SO I tried to solve that problem by reinstalling a Ghost 9.0 image that I have of my OS drive.  Shouldn't be too difficult, right?  Well, low and behold I found out that I couldn't find the boot disks that came with my Norton SW 2005.

After much research and bogging thru the forums, I found that G2003  will create a boot disc for me (a floppy one), and I got rid of my floppy drive long ago!  I created the Bootable CD/DVD that nightowl put together using the GHOST.exe (2003).

The CD worked great and I got into the recover console no problem, however, much to my dismay G2003 will not use the *.v2i files that G9.0 created when it backed up my OS.

So here are the questions:

1. Can I convert my *.v2i files to *.GHO so that the bootable CD will recognize and use?  If so, how?

IF NOT

2. Can I replace the ghost.exe (2003) file on the bootable CD with the V2iConsole.exe (Ghost 9.0) that I originally made the images with?  If so, how?  Do I need to edit any of the script in config.sys and autoexec.bat files to account for this change, and how?

I'm not knowledgable in the ins and outs of program script writing so if needed please be specific.

Thanks, I searched the forums before I posted but did not find anything that resembled this question.  If it has already been answered then please let me know where and I'll get it sorted out without taking up too much of anyones time.

swellthekitty,

No and no. You are in trouble. Any friends with the CD? Any Ghost 9, 10, Save and Restore or NSW will work. Maybe Symantec could provide a replacement. I know they have Recovery Environment ISOs for download.

Thanks for the quick response.  Any chance you have that iso link memorized!

Have a good one.

I think you have to contact Symantec Live Technical Support.

Good luck.

Live-chat worked great, got on real quick but the three Indian reps I spoke with couldn't help a lick.  THey ended up sending me the customer service phone numbers and it would cost $20 and at least a weeks of waiting to get the recovery cd via snailmail.  Too much waiting for me...need it now.

You'd think that a corp like symantec would be able to deal better over the internet!

Thanks anyhow.

No ISO download. That's disappointing. What are your computer plans over the next week?

Brian -

Thanks for all the help thus far.  I was wondering if you could explain to me (if you've got the time) why swapping the ghost files would not work with nightowl's bootable cd.

As for plans with the computer, I'm not quite ready to shoot it yet, nor am I ready to give up on Ghost and start the long and fun process of reinstalling everything onto my HDD.  So more research and burning ambergris into the night until I figure this one out.  Plus I figured it's as good a time as any to begin asking friends whether they've got the disc I need!

Thanks

Cooper

Quick answer. Totally different files.

Regarding the next week. You could install WinXP and the few programs that you will need over the week and when the CD arrives, restore your image.

Was able to track down a friend that had the recovery cd and am in the process of restoring the old OS drive.  Woohoo!

It's funny to me that it was so difficult to obtain this CD as there is no true setup files.  That is to say that this CD should be available to others on the web.  Hint hint, nudge nudge.

I was wondering if there is a place where this could live or if there is some impropriety with that?

I'm am willing to zip, rar, etc the iso if needed.

THanks again.

swellthekitty,

Actually, the recovery CD is also the setup CD. So you can understand why it is not freely available.

This recovery cd that I have is different from the Systemworks setup disc that I have.  It only has a few files:

folders-
FONTS
HELP
INF
MSAGENT
SHARED
SHELL
START
SYSTEM32
WINSXS

files-
WINHLP32
BIOSINFO
NTDETECT
SETUPLDR
SPCMDCOM
WINBOM
BOOTFIX
TXTSETUP.SIF

none of which appear to be sytemworks (i.e. AV, GHOST, etc) setup files, or am I mistaken.  (It wouldn't be the first time!)

My mistake. I was referring to the Ghost 9 CD.

No problem man.

So back to the original question of making this available for people that were in my position: is there a place for this reovery disc to live?

I think Symantec would object. License issue etc.
