Title: OVERSTUFFING: Tweaking a Ghost 2003 Bootable CD
Post by El_Pescador on Feb 23rd, 2007 at 4:09pm
Anyone setting out in Norton Ghost 2003 to make a single 1.44MB floppy system diskette utilizing MS-DOS learns very quickly that space is at a premium.  GHOST.EXE is so voluminous that not even the modest HIMEM.SYS can be squeezed in.  However, when using a bootable 1.44MB floppy diskette to generate a bootable CD with Nero Express there is a "workaround"  for this dilemma, i.e, place GHOST.EXE in a folder entitled GHOST located in the non-bootable sector of the CD designated Drive X: and then insert a PATH statement in AUTOEXEC.BAT pointing at the target folder.

As there are a number of DOS-dependent utility routines in my kit bag (see images below), I decided to take advantage of all
that space so now I am able to merely quit Ghost 2003 after the boot-up to enjoy a DOS A:> prompt allowing an easy switch over
to Drive X:.  Doing so allows me to employ those tools contained in the various folders therein in order to perform tasks in DOS that cannot readily be accomplished in Windows.

Using my tweaking technique, I successfully performed a "one-off" of NightOwl's Project #1 -'Standard Ghost Bootable CD/DVD--on Steroids' where the Ghost executable file was in its own folder in the non-bootable sector of the CD.  I used the "cowbird-nesting"  trick in Nero Express to substitute my WinImage-injected bootable packet for the stock DosBootimage.ima file when burning the bootable CD-R.  My next effort will be to embed USB drivers in the WinImage file.

Pesky,

I know you have employed ghost 8.2 on a reatogo/bartpe disc and you realize the better support for usb devices. You can do the same with UBCD4win and have access to many more useful tools to boot.
They also make it easy to add your bootable DOS disk images to the CD.

I now have a single CD that  I can run all my DOS tools (ghost 2003, partition magic, etc.) or boot to a bart pe  environment when needed.
My "do it all" CD
