Title: Every Image Created is Corrupt
Post by jwoods on Apr 10th, 2007 at 12:19pm
First of all let me say I love this site!  I have found a lot of great advice here.   Now to my issue:
I am trying to create an image of a 12GB Dell 2950 server partition using a Ghost 2003 boot disk.  Every image I create shows as corrupt.  I am able to create images of other servers that are fine.  The server has a fresh install of Windows Server 2003.  I am at a loss as to what is causing this.  Has anyone else run into this issue?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Do you have another copy of Ghost? You may want to try with it before further investigation.

I do have an older version that I used to use for creating images.  It is having the same issues.  It appears to be specific to the new server.  The new server has a very large raid 5 array.  Is there a size limit for Ghost 2003 images?  I do have spanning enabled.

You may want to try with a newer version. Also with raid there are some problems. You may want to search the board and see msgs on this issue.

Thanks Rama, I did just get Ghost 10.0.  The problem is, I do not want to have to install it.  Do you know if it's possible to create a boot disk with Ghost 10.0?  I looked through the documentation and could not find anything.

You can boot the CD in recovery mode which runs in WinPE and chose legacy recovery and you will find the ghost8 program which can be used for creation and restoration of ghost images. If you search this board, there are msgs about the Ghost8 inside the recovery CD. You should stick with Ghost8 in the recovery cd.

Should you procure either Norton Ghost 10.0, Norton Save & Restore, or the Symantec Recovery Disk
included with Norton SystemWorks 2006 Premier you can boot up with the factory CD to immediately
engage the legacy Backup/Restore "cold-imaging" procedures by following the path 'Recover > Recover Data on My Computer > Recover using a legacy Ghost image'.  Doing so will yield the side benefit of bypassing both USB mass-storage device and - most, if not all - SATA HDD glitches frequently encountered with DOS-dependent Norton Ghost 2003.  In essence, this procedure uses restoreghost.exe (an alternate name for ghost32.exe) to allow both immediate creation of Ghost Backup images or the converse Recovery of such images that are in fact totally compatible and interchangeable with those *.gho/*.ghs files created with the ghost.exe of Norton Ghost 2003 - but not with those files created with Norton Ghost 9, Norton Ghost 10.0, or Norton Save & Restore during "hot-imaging".

Thanks El_Pescador, I did try that.  When I try and create the image from the Ghost 8 console it only sees the external USB hard drive.  It does not see the local hard drive at all.   Have you ever seen that happen before?

When booting from the Ghost 10 disc, at the very first part of the loading process the is an opportunity to press *F6* so you can load HDD controller drivers that may not be present on the Ghost 10 disc--similar to the installation disc for WinXP that may not have a particular HDD controller driver.

To use this function, however, one needs a floppy disc on the system!

Jwoods, for information on creating a custom version of the Symantec Recovery Disc that has the drivers you need, see this thread.

Nightowl, thanks for the advice.  That got my closer to my goal.  I was able to get the driver installed for the local disks but now the external disk will not show up.  I take it I need to find the driver for that as well?  It appeared before I installed the 3rd party driver for the local disk so I am wondering if there is a way to use the drivers on the Ghost CD along with the 3rd party driver?

Pleonasm, I will take a look at that thread on creating a custom version.  Thanks for all of your advice!

I've been working too hard...my brain is fried.  I forgot that I had disabled the front USB ports on the server while troubleshooting another issue.  That would cause the USB Hard Drive not to show up!  Once I re-enabled them I succesfully created and restored the partition image using Ghost 8.2 with the proper drivers!   Thank you all very much for your help!
