Title: Ghost 2003 - Restoring NTFS paritions in DOS - Revisited Post by clevelandtxus on Jun 26th, 2007 at 10:15pm
This is a restatement of a problem I'm having with Ghost 2003 on my computer.
First, here is my storage configuration - I have a dual boot system but I use Windows XP 99.999% of the time. (1) IDE #1 - 2 hard drives (drive letters in parenthesis) a) Hard drive #1 (120 GB) 1st partition - FAT 32, Primary partition contains Windows 98 OS (C) 2nd partition - NTFS, in extended partition (E) 3rd partition - NTFS, in extended partition (P) b) Hard drive #2 (80 GB) 1st partition - NTFS, Primary partition contains Windows XP OS (D) 2nd partition - NTFS, in extended partition (F) 3rd partition - NTFS, in extended partition (I) 4th partition - NTFS, in extended partition (J) 5th partition - NTFS, in extended partition (K) 6th partition - NTFS, in extended partition (L) (2) IDE #2 - 2 DVD drives a) DVD 1 (H) b) DVD 2 (M) (3) External USB drive #1 (80 GB) FAT 32 (N) (4) External USB drive #2 (320 GB) FAT 32 (T & U) I write my Ghost images from the two hard drives to the external USB drives. I can initiate these image backups from Windows XP which boots to DOS, or I can run off a boot floppy, or I can run off a boot CD. I have no problems creating new image backups and validating them. At this point every thing looks good. I can restore images to all partitions on hard drive #1. I can restore images to all partitions on hard drive #2 except for the 1st partition, the primary partition, my D drive which contains my Windows XP OS. I boot into DOS to run Ghost 2003, I select the image backup I want to restore, in this case the problem partition. I choose hard drive #2 because I want to restore my D drive but when the screen with the partitions show up the 2nd partition is highlighted. I can't scroll up to or click on the 1st (primary) partition as this is the one I truly want to restore. The highlight is locked in. It seems that Ghost can't match my image file for my D drive to its rightful place. I know the image file is good because the verification step after the image backup comes up good. Also, if I go back to Windows XP, I can successfully view and restore/copy selected files from backup image using Ghost Explorer. Is the problem in Ghost or is there something weird or wrong with my hard drive itself? Should I replace my hard drive? What is even stranger is that this problem is random in that I can't replicate a pattern to resolve it. Right now I have 3 backups of my D drive in which one is fine and the other two are not. In the past two days I've backed up my D drive 6 times, writing to one USB drive, then the other, then to one of the NTFS partitions and then one to my C drive. All 6 passed the integrity check but none could be used because of my problem when I try to restore. I'm not having any problems with my computer but if I ever do there is no guarantee I can ever restore my D drive. Please help. |

1st, nice job in laying out the problem, with drives detailed.
next, are you *sure* the image is NOT of the F drive .. the one where it seems the image wants to restore to? is there a *chance* it could be from this partition? are you able to select any of the *other* (not d or f) partitions? .. for the restore what if you create a *new* image of d? can you then select d as the destination for the restore? in other words, is it JUST for this particular image? you say,"but none could be used because of my problem when I try to restore" .. so it seems this problem affects *all* images. i added a little text color to help clarify the problem. i have had similar problems, only to find the images i created weren't what i thot they were. are you sure you selected partition > to > image, and not disk > to > image? since both d & f are ntfs, the file system shouldn't be an issue. have any of the images been created using a boot floppy? or only from windows interface? i would try a boot floppy (to *create*) if you haven't already. yes, you definitely need to get this resolved. have you *ever* been able to restore to this drive? in other words, is this a NEW problem? in short, it seems like something is preventing you from selecting the d drive as the target for the image restore partition, right? .. when that is the image's source. |

Clarify a couple things: 1. What Ghost procedure do you use to create your backup images--*Local > Disk > to Image* (i.e. whole disk backup), or *Local > Partition > to Image* (i.e. partition only backup)? 2. Quote:
Okay, you can create images using each type of interface and boot option. Quote:
This sounds like you have only tried initiating a restore from a boot floppy or boot CD. Have you tried setting up the restore from within the Windows interface--will the Windows interface allow you to select that first partition on the 2nd HDD as the destination--or is it *greyed out* and not selectable here as well? 3. What are the DOS letter assignments once booted to DOS? 4. I assume you select disk 3 or 4 (USB HDD's as the source for the image file), browse to the image file and select it. If you are doing a *Local > Partition > from Image*, you then have to select the partition in the image file--correct? And then you select disk 2 as the destination, and then when the list of partitions are shown, partition 1 is greyed out as an option--correct? |

You've asked several questions...
Rad, No, I'm not crossing my D and F drives. I did this once months ago and had to redo the D drive backup. As far as other partitions are concerned, only backups of D have the problem. And the only thing unique about D is that it is my primary partition on my second hard drive that contains Windows XP to which I boot successfully all the time. Yes, only F is highlighted when I try to restore the D drive. D is which is greyed out is right above F on the screen and everything below F is greyed out - drives I, J, K and L. I can't scroll or select D, I, J, K or L. I once restored to this particular drive for my L partition as I was testing my restores. The image source is truly a backup of my D drive because and can go into Ghost Explorer and confirm this beyond a shadow of a doubt. Night Owl, I've created images using four methods: (1) From Windows XP selecting my options and then the reboot to DOS to do its things, (2) From Windows XP going into interactive mode and doing the create and verify manually, (3) From a boot floppy and (4) From a boot CD. I've made images to USB drive 1, USB drive, to a NTFS partition and to my FAT 32 partition in which all have failed. I even booted without USB support when going to NTFS and FAT 32 partitions. I only do partition backups, not disk. All of these have either 1 or 2 partitions in them. I'll have to get back to you on the DOS letter assignments. Yes, on drive 2, partition 1 is greyed out, as well as partitions 3, 4, 5 and 6. Anyways, this morning I went into Windows XP and asked it to create an image for drive D and write it to USB drive 1. This worked fine as it passed the integrity check. I went back to XP and verified the image using Ghost Explorer. Opened a couple of files from the image. Then I went back to DOS in the interactive mode to attempt a restore. No dice, same old problem. Here is the log file that was produced for the above backup: ======================================== BackupOperation 1 -- GHOST\GSCRIPT.TXT ---------------------------------------------------------- [BackupOperation] AlreadyProcessedFile = YES BeginTimeParam = Wed Jun 27 06:00:04 2007 CompressionParam = 1 DestFingerprintParam = de7fefc9-2a45-4c67-a0a8-75b2985dd5e9 DestPartitionOffsetParam = 63 EndTimeParam = Wed Jun 27 06:30:22 2007 ExecutionStateParam = ExecutionComplete FileIdParam = 1911478 PathParam = \dq.gho SourceFingerprintParam = f211007d-9f1c-4ca8-aa39-1420213f5482 SourcePartitionOffsetParam = 63 UseImageDescriptionParam = YES UseLFOParam = NO WindowsPathParam = T:\dq.gho [ImageCheckOperation] AlreadyProcessedFile = YES BeginTimeParam = Wed Jun 27 06:30:22 2007 DestFingerprintParam = de7fefc9-2a45-4c67-a0a8-75b2985dd5e9 DestPartitionOffsetParam = 63 EndTimeParam = Wed Jun 27 06:39:59 2007 ExecutionStateParam = ExecutionComplete FileIdParam = 1911478 PathParam = \dq.gho UseLFOParam = NO WindowsPathParam = T:\dq.gho -- GHOST\ARGS.TXT ------------------------------------------------------------- -wizard "-chkimg,@FIND[ID:1911478]\dq.gho" -ghwrap -- AUTOEXEC.BAT --------------------------------------------------------------- @echo off SET PATH=C:\GHOST;C:\ SET PROMPT=To return to Windows, type ghreboot and press Enter.$_$p$g SET TZ=GHO+07:00 if "%CONFIG%" == "WINDOWS" goto WINDOWS MOUSE.COM OFF > NUL: MOUSE.COM CD \GHOST GHWRAP.EXE goto EOF :WINDOWS \GHOST\GHREBOOT.EXE :EOF -- CONFIG.SYS ----------------------------------------------------------------- [MENU] menuitem=GHOST,Run Norton Ghost Dos Operation menuitem=WINDOWS,Return to Windows without running Norton Ghost menudefault=GHOST,3 [GHOST] LASTDRIVE=Z [common] Dos=high,umb Device=himem.sys Device=usbaspi.sys /norst /e /v Device=di1000dd.sys [WINDOWS] ============================================== I have three other images of my D drive. One that presents the problem and two that are OK. This is what I mean that this problem is random. I'm trying to find the logfiles for the two that are working. I'll send them as soon as I can. Thanks for your help. |

Here is the log of one that works. I can actually attempt the restore and
have complete access to all the partitions on drive #2 in which to do a restore, not just drive F. ============================================ BackupOperation 1 -- GHOST\GSCRIPT.TXT ---------------------------------------------------------- [BackupOperation] AlreadyProcessedFile = YES BeginTimeParam = Sun Jun 3 10:05:31 2007 CompressionParam = 1 DestFingerprintParam = de7fefc9-2a45-4c67-a0a8-75b2985dd5e9 DestPartitionOffsetParam = 63 EndTimeParam = Sun Jun 3 10:33:51 2007 ExecutionStateParam = ExecutionComplete FileIdParam = 11336410 PathParam = \dt.gho SourceFingerprintParam = f211007d-9f1c-4ca8-aa39-1420213f5482 SourcePartitionOffsetParam = 63 UseImageDescriptionParam = YES UseLFOParam = NO WindowsPathParam = T:\dt.gho [ImageCheckOperation] AlreadyProcessedFile = YES BeginTimeParam = Sun Jun 3 10:33:51 2007 DestFingerprintParam = de7fefc9-2a45-4c67-a0a8-75b2985dd5e9 DestPartitionOffsetParam = 63 EndTimeParam = Sun Jun 3 10:42:58 2007 ExecutionStateParam = ExecutionComplete FileIdParam = 11336410 PathParam = \dt.gho UseLFOParam = NO WindowsPathParam = T:\dt.gho -- GHOST\ARGS.TXT ------------------------------------------------------------- -wizard "-chkimg,@FIND[ID:11336410]\dt.gho" -ghwrap -- AUTOEXEC.BAT --------------------------------------------------------------- @echo off SET PATH=C:\GHOST;C:\ SET PROMPT=To return to Windows, type ghreboot and press Enter.$_$p$g SET TZ=GHO+07:00 if "%CONFIG%" == "WINDOWS" goto WINDOWS MOUSE.COM OFF > NUL: MOUSE.COM CD \GHOST GHWRAP.EXE goto EOF :WINDOWS \GHOST\GHREBOOT.EXE :EOF -- CONFIG.SYS ----------------------------------------------------------------- [MENU] menuitem=GHOST,Run Norton Ghost Dos Operation menuitem=WINDOWS,Return to Windows without running Norton Ghost menudefault=GHOST,3 [GHOST] LASTDRIVE=Z [common] Dos=high,umb Device=himem.sys Device=usbaspi.sys /norst /e /v Device=di1000dd.sys [WINDOWS] =============================================== |

I've not gone beyond this point as I don't want to restore unless DOS will prompt me with an "Are you sure?" so I can prevent the actual restore. |

Were you to have adequate external HDD resources, you could consider using removable media to employ either Norton Ghost 2003 or Ver 8.2 in WIN PE to create "(whole)disk-to-image" Backups of any and all of those physical disks at issue. Be advised that doing so captures all partitions whether or not you are even aware that any hidden partitions are residing therein. Once the Backup images pass Integrity Checks, you could then become very aggressive in your inquiries with negligible risk. EP :'( |
