Title: Clone system disk - spare bootable HDD - Ghost 10 Post by markok on Aug 12th, 2007 at 8:37am
Hello, i have some questions re Ghost 10 backup and restore recovery scenario if you do not mind :)
Just installed ghost 10 and did the very 1st Backup of my System disk to the external USB drive. Everything clear so far... In order to be on the safe side I also want test a restore function. For this purpose I installed a second internal HDD where I want to restore the image to - from USB drive. I only want this 2nd internal HDD to be able to boot when my Primary System HDD fails. (I will disconnect it and remove it from the computer immediately after restore process ends)... and will continue to boot from my Primary System HDD - as before. Questions: Which options I need to select during restore to my 2nd internal HDD? e.g. Make thisk bootable? Set drive active? Also, do I need to delete all data/partitions before restoring to 2nd internal HDD? I kindly ask you to advice. Thank you, Marko |

markok, If you have a partition on your new HD that is in the same position (ie first, second, etc) as the OS partition and is roughly the same size then you are OK. Otherwise create a partition to use or delete a partition or two to create space. It doesn't matter if you restore into a partition or into unallocated space. Some quick instructions. Remove your old HD from the computer, put the new HD in the Master position. Boot to the CD set the Time Zone click Recover My Computer You will probably get a message about No recovery points found. Click OK. click Open another location Navigate to your recovery point click Recover My Computer put a dot in Custom (not Express). Click OK. Next choose the Unallocated Space on your new HD or the partition to restore into. Next. tick Verify recovery point before restore tick Check for file system errors after recovery Resize drive to fill unallocated space will probably be greyed out. If it isn’t, tick the box put a dot in Primary partition tick Set drive active (for booting OS) tick Restore MBR (as it's a new HD) Next tick in Reboot when finished click Finish. Yes. Check computer clock after WinXP boots. When you are satisfied with the result you can put your old HD back as a master and put the new HD in the slave position or remove it from the computer. Let us know that it was easy. |

Will this same procedure work for a laptop?
I am upgrading to a larger hard drive on my XP Pro OS laptop -- I have Norton Ghost 10. I normally back up to an external USB drive. |

jwarsaw, Sure. Same technique. But if you have a Dell laptop with MediaDirect2 in a HPA there are a few extra things to do. This is one situation where you must NOT Restore the MBR. Also you must not use Copy my Hard Drive. If you don't have a Dell just go ahead using the above instructions. |
