Title: Norton Save & Restore!!!
Post by Beetleman on Aug 18th, 2007 at 12:30am
On a regular basis I have my computer do a backup of the computer and also the files, with recovery points, all of this going to an external hard disk, which over time has filled up this drive. Is it possible to delete the older backups in order to create extra space on this drive.

What I am looking to do is to delete the oldest backups to retrieve space on this drive.

Is it just a matter of looking in these backup folders and selecting by date the oldest and deleting them or is there some more complex method than this

Cheers!!!

Beetleman,

I'm sure there is a complex way to do this but I wouldn't bother trying to find it in NSR. I just delete the recovery points from Windows Explorer (My Computer). Plain and simple. Delete as many as you like. NSR may complain later that it can't find these deleted recovery points but ignore the complaint.

That's how I've done it with all the Ghosts.

Brian, that's what I do also for Ghost 9,10, and 12.  But with Norton Save & Restore, you have all the norton-style-zip files of the folders and files, so it isn't practical.

Beetleman, you can limit the number of image backups in the settings for that job.

Or, you can let NSR manage everything for you.  Look in the manual, starting on page 94.

Automating management of backup data

Norton Save and Restore can monitor your backup storage space and notify you
when it is getting full. It can also automatically delete old recovery points and
older versions of files from file and folder backups that exceed the threshold. If
you do not specify a threshold, Norton Save and Restore notifies you when the
disk reaches 90percent of its total capacity.

To automate management of backup data
1 On the Tools page, click Manage Backup Destination.
2 Check Limit file versions for file and folder backups, and then type a number
between 1 and 99.
3 Check Monitor disk space usage for backup storage, and then drag the slider
to limit the total amount of disk space that can be used for your recovery
points and your file and folder backup data.
4 Do one of the following:
■ Check Warn me when backup storage exceeds threshold if you only want
to be notified when the storage size is exceeded, but you do not want any
action to be taken.
■ Check Automatically optimize storage if you want Norton Save and
Restore to manage the backup data automatically, without prompting
you.
If you select this option, Norton Save and Restore automatically deletes
the old recovery points and limits file versions to remain within the
threshold that you set.
5 Check Delay changes until next backup if you do not want your changes
applied until the next backup runs.
6 Click OK.

I'm having a problem choosing the number.  It's grayed out.  Anyone know why?  Here's an image of it.  Thanks.

I think it is because you don't have any File and Folder backups defined.  That option is greyed out on my G12 as well, and I don't have File and Folder backups defined either; just image backups.  So, it doesn't apply to image backup settings.  Set those in the image backup definition.

"Limit file versions for file and folder backups".
