Title: On-disk Partition Doesn't Match O/S
Post by Ninja on Nov 14th, 2007 at 11:56am
I have a Dell Inspiron 600m. It is only 2 years old and I had to have the HD replaced in 01/07 and now the replacement HD has also failed in 11/07. Ridiculous. After getting the 01/07 replacement HD, I purchased Ghost 10 so I would not have to go through days of reloading all of my applications. The 01/07 HD was a Toshiba MK8032GAX. The new HD Dell just shipped me is a Fujitsu MHV2080AH. Both 80GB. The Toshiba drive had on it the Dell Utility in Partition 1, the O/S in Partition 2, and the Dell Restore in Partition 3. Each partition has its own file/image as part of my backup.

On the first go, I tried recovering all three. It completed the recovery operation (with no errors and I did check off to verify things) and then I rebooted. It booted into the Dell Restore and would not go beyond this. Using a HD enclosure, I was able to see that it loaded the Dell Restore and a few files from  the O/S part on my system and that was it. I talked with Dell and they said I only needed to recover the O/S image that was on my partition 2 of the old drive to the new drive. I do not need the Dell parts.

So for round 2, I did just that. But 5 or so hours into the recovery process I got some sort of error message (no error code) about the on-disk partition not matching the o/s (which I have paraphrased because in my tired, blurry state I didn't write it down). I spoke with Symantec and they told me it sounded like Ghost 10 wasn't seeing my HD yet if I went in to the Utilities section from the boot disk, I could see the HD from there. They suggested me loading XP on my system and then doing the recovery.  Does that sound right?

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Ninja,

It should be straight forward. I hope.

Delete all partitions on your new HD so it is blank. I assume you have the new HD installed in your laptop and the images are on an external HD.

Boot to the Ghost 10 CD and restore the Dell Utility image. Don't reboot.

Next, restore the WinXP image using this procedure.

Quote:
click Recover My Computer
You will probably get a message about No recovery points found. Click OK.
click Open another location
Navigate to your recovery point
click Recover My Computer
put a dot in Custom (not Express). Click OK.
Next
choose the Unallocated Space on your new HD. Next.
tick Verify recovery point before restore
tick Check for file system errors after recovery
Don't tick  Resize drive to fill unallocated space
put a dot in Primary partition
tick Set drive active (for booting OS)
tick Restore MBR
Next
Tick in Reboot when finished
click Finish. Yes.

You should now boot into WinXP. Let us know and we'll talk about the Dell Restore partition later.

Thanks for your response.

Based on the feedback I got from Symantec at the wee-hours this morning, I installed the O/S and now, based on Dell's recommendation, I am at the 10% progress mark of trying to recover just the WinXP part of the image (what was Partition 2).

Is the Dell Utility really necessary? Dell told me it wasn't (but then again, my luck has not been good with Dell). I guess I want to know if I should stop the process that has been running the last 2 hours and redo things.

It's nice to have but it is not necessary. If you don't restore it you may have boot.ini problems with WinXP (hal.dll is missing) but that is easy to fix. Usually Ghost 10 automatically edits the new boot.ini to reference "partition(1)".

I forgot to ask about your hardware. Is your external HD powered by USB or external power? If it's USB powered, do you have one or two cables?

How large is your WinXP image?

My images are on a BuffaloLink (which has its own power) that is connected to my Linksys and I have connected my laptop to the Linksys.

The image file is 56GB of which most are applications and not files (hence the reason I was dreading doing a fresh install).

I sure hope you're right about Ghost taking care of the boot file. Doesn't sound like fun for a novice like me to have to deal with!

I guess that's why it will take several hours. Restoring in a desktop, using two internal HDs, proceeds at more than 1 GB /minute. Don't be concerned about the boot.ini. as Ghost 10 will probably fix it, but if it doesn't, you can edit boot.ini from the Ghost 10 boot CD.

Ninja,

Out of interest, do you have Dell MediaDirect in that laptop?

Dell Media Direct doesn't ring any bells. Logging on to the Dell site, I see they loaded on my original system QuickSet, Driver Reset Tool, Support 3.4, Crash Analysis Tool, and then a bunch of 3rd party applications.

That's good. MediaDirect2 causes problems for those upgrading to a larger HD. For example, if you upgraded from an 80 GB HD to a 160 GB HD, the new HDs capacity would be truncated to 80 GB and you would think that you had been sold the wrong HD.

Thanks Brian. Things seem to be working now.

How would I check to ensure no critical system files were corrupted on the image that I used since the hard drive ended up failing? Is there any way to know?

Ninja,

Was the image created well before the HD failed?

Couple of months before. But say it hadn't? Say it was an image that was more recent? (Trying to file it away in my mind for future reference.)
