Title: Latest version of Ghost 2003 downloadable from Symantec on Feb 1, 08

Hi:

Brand new to this forum. My name is Frank. I have been a diehard user of Ghost 2003 and previous for 9 years or so. I swear by it.

I have been upgrading my machines lately, therefore I now face SATA drives and SATA optical drives.

My version of Norton Ghost 2003 was 2003.775 and I went the normal route to update which is Symantec Live Update. This process was longer than expected because you need Windows Installer 3.1 just to update LiveUpdate itself (not a typo). Anyway, very protracted.

Bottom line: The version of Norton Ghost 2003 that LiveUpdate will download and update for you is 2003.789 that is as of today, February 1st, 2008. I just did it.

As some of you may know, the last known version of Norton Ghost 2003 is supposed to be 2003.793

So: -does anyone know why Symantec won't let you download 2003.793?

2003.793 is supposed to be the version that facilitates SATA drive usage but does anyone have experience with 2003.789, the one I got ?

Anyone kind enough to to let me have 2003.793 I own the program and can send scan of my original disk?

And lastly, has anyone found a good generic dos driver for SATA optical drives (dvd or cd) and if so, where can I get it?

I am very happy to see that this forum exists as I am a real lover of the program.

Thanks in advance for reading this and possibly contributing an answer.
Frank   :)

Hello Frank,
welcome to RADIFIED ... :) ... !

I installed Ghost 2003 a few months ago. I didn't get any updates at all until I added a Hosts-file, giving me a choice of updating from Symantec-Archive. After adding the Hosts-file, it was updated to 793. It took two sessions, first to 789, then to 793.

Have a look at How to obtain the programs updates that are archived on Symantec LiveUpdate server. I think the procedure is complicated. If the installed LiveUpdate version is fairly recent (3.something) you only need to download the Hosts-file and put it in the LiveUpdate folder (C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate).

The next time you start LiveUpdate, you have a drop down menu with the choices Symantec-Live and Symantec-Archive. Choose Symantec-Archive but when done, don't forget to set it back to Symantec-Live.

I did this because I could. I went from .775 to .793 it worked a treat.

I have been to Symantec and tried to find what functionality I have picked up. I looked for release notes on the different versions without success.

I would like to see the documentation if anyone knows where it is. Otherwise, someone with intimate knowledge of the version might like to tell me, and whoever may read this thread in the future, what is new?

stevethegil,
when I wonder about things like that, I always look for *.txt files in the programs folder. In "C:\Program Files\Symantec\Norton Ghost 2003" there is a "readme.txt" explaining the updates. Whether that is the whole truth and nothing but, I don't know.
