Title: Quick Reply Box mod
Post by Rad on Mar 14th, 2008 at 1:25am
Just installed the "Quick-Reply Box mod":

http://www.boardmod.org/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=newsy22;action=display;num=1197002973

This mod allows user to post quickly a reply or post .. without having to launch a separate Post/Reply page. Hence: "Quick".

Okay, it seems to work as advertised, but does not support text-size and box-size changes that are available by clicking the "Reply" button.

It's not available to guests either, which makes sense, since "guests" are not allowed to post here. (A default setting I can over-ride, but choose not to.)

I can make this go away by clicking a single button .. if you decide you don't like it. You can still click the standard/regular "Post/Reply" buttons if you want to .. just like always. The only negative I can see is that this will add to page load times .. tho it shouldn't make much of a difference (and none to guests).

There is also a Quick quote mod I'm trying to install, but having a problem.

http://www.boardmod.org/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=newsy22;action=display;num=11970029732;start=45#51

Actually I installed the Quick-Reply mod cuz I *really* want the Quick-quote mod, and the Quick-Reply mod is REQUIRED to be installed first, in order for the Quick-quote mod to work.

Okay, I got the Quick-quote mod installed. (Easy fix.) Pretty cool. You simply copy the exact text you wanna quote and click the Quick-quote link, and the quote automatically appears in your message. Very cool (simple, easy-to-use).

Quick-quote only works with the Quick Reply Box. See here for details:

Anybody using the Quick-Reply box, and/or the Quick-quote feature?

Thoughts? Useful? Useless?

I've been playing with it on and off--it's new--I'm so used to doing it the other way that I forget to hit those other options!

I did loose my text size font settings and reply box size when I hit *Preview*--just so you know!

@Rad

Also, just noticed...when you do a *Preview* now, you don't loose the previous responses down below the reply box area--must have been part of the update you installed--I've always disliked loosing access to those responses after a *preview*!

That was using the *Preview* at the bottom of the *Quick Reply Box*--just did it again--and lost the settings!

Now, going back to the regular *Reply* function--text size and reply box sizes are back to *default*--i.e. small  >:( !

i see. the two don't seem to play well together. either one or the other.
seems like a bug. maybe i'll submit it. wonder if they can fix.

it's only the preview in quick-reply that wipes out settings in regular reply, right? not post.

Well, let's see.....hitting *Post* now and not *Preview*....

Nope--hitting *Post* wipes out the settings as well!

So using the Quick-Port/Reply box/feature AT ALL wipes out settings in regular Post/Reply box (font-size, box-size).

I submitted bug report:

http://www.boardmod.org/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=newsy22;action=display;num=1197002973;start=41#41

Not sure how motivated they will be to fix, since it only occurs if you install and use a MOD, but maybe they can patch.

Rad, I think I noticed a small anomaly with the quick quote.

On a thread which I had already marked as wanting notification of replies, I used the quick quote to reply.

After replying it appeared that the quick-quote mod UN-checked notification of replies.  (I had to recheck it.)

Can you verify if this is happening to you?

This is a test of my theory.

I WAS set for auto notification, but now my notification is disabled.  I have to manually re-add notifications.

Summary:  If you use the Quick-Quote, then you have to manually revisit the thread and ask for notifications again.

Okay, they released a *new* Quick Reply mod .. specifically for YaBB v2.2.1 (2 days ago):

http://www.boardmod.org/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=beta_y22;action=display;num=1206312302

It'll take me a little to figure out exactly how to implement, cuz I also have installed the Quick quote mod, which is dependent on the Quick Reply mod. But good news nonetheless.

That Jet Li guy (from Germany) is a coding madman.

They are calling it "Advanced Version." Guess we'll have to install to see what is "advanced".

It's still officially in 'beta' but I ain't scared. =)

Speaking of "notifications," John .. I also noted they have an "Advanced" notification mod:

http://www.boardmod.org/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=beta_y22;action=display;num=1205914183

Does that sound like something we want?

Update: The new Quick-quote mod is already contained in the (new) Quick-Reply mod. Cool. That's how it should be.

From what I read of the "Advanced Notification Mod", it appears that it puts back in the thread title in the email notifications.

As you probably remember, that used to be there but got dropped with this last round of updates.

Personally, I thought it was always a nice feature because when you saw the email in your inbox, you knew which thread it was referring to.

Not sure why it disappeared, but my personal vote would be to bring it back.  Thanks!!   :)

I uninstalled the old Quick Reply & Quick quote mods, and installed the new "Advanced" Quick Reply mod, which contains Quick quote, altho it does not seem to be working properly. Will troubleshoot.

I just needed to read the instructions. =/

I see the following text, which doesn't look right:

{yabb qqname}  and {yabbqquote}

Otherwise, you can now set both box size (height/width) and font size for the Quick Reply box. Pretty cool.

The quick quote function isn't working.

I figured it out .. had to re-up (previously modded) Display.template file to my /blk_gry3d folder .. since we use a different style/template. This file was UNmodded when I UNinstalled the old Quick-Reply and Quick-quote mods.

All seems to be working very nicely now, no?

I will install the email notification mod next, John, tho it might take me a few days, since I get the Bug bright-n-early tomorrow morning, and this is my weekend with him.

Hi Joe. 3-year old stuff .. the park, swings, jungle gym, throwing rocks in the water, climbing trees, watching Pooh movies. Even saw Tarzan for the 1st time. (Movie/Disney vdo)

I installed the email mod today John. Lemme know what you think. Any problems? Easy mod. 3 files.

I make my box-size long as possible width-wise, and slightly taller, height-wise. Plus I prefer 13px font size.

Very nice.  The entire new post is in the email, which was a real surprise.

You have too much time on your hands ...  :)  :)

Thanks.

John,

If someone *modifies* a post, do you also receive a notification email? .. or only when there is a new post?

No, at least from what I have seen.  When you first save your reply, it appears the email is sent.  I've seen a few emails that were different from the post when I went to the website to view it.

When I first asked about getting more info on the emails, the old yabb version sent a "standard" email, but the subject contained the Subject Title of the post, so if you saw your inbox with 10 emails, you could easily see from the thread title, which one had a reply.  It was a nice summary.

I know of other forum boards that are like yabb is now:  you get an email with the contents of the post.

Either (or both) are nice additions.

Because of the (previous) small text size, I almost always modified my posts, to either correct spelling or to make something clearer.  Now, since I know the *first* reply is emailed out, I tend to spend more time before hitting reply.

Also at one time there was a small "post modified on ..." added whenever you modified your post.  I have mixed feelings on that.

P.S. I hope all these mods won't make it harder for you to upgrade in the future, or make it a longer process.

So what happened to the small enhancement that just showed the thread title in the email?  That seemed like a small yet beneficial addition.

Mine is just one opinion.  You have many members (and LOTS of guests) so let them weigh in.

Interesting. I have always been a big editor .. posting quickly, then editing later elaborately. Now, tho, I should probably heed your advice.

Yeah, I think NightOwl enabled that for a while.

They do (make it harder). You pretty much, depending on the size of the upgrade, have to uninstall all mods prior to upgrading. Then reinstall afterward.

Plus, some mods can conflict if the both use the same base code (which the first mod will change). I use BoardMod, which is very cool: http://www.boardmod.org/

It searches the code contained in a mirror-installation of the forum software on your home PC, and "modifies" the code as per the particular "mod" file instructs it to. Then you simply upload the modified files (usually in ASCII mode), and verify CHMOD permissions. Works surprisingly well. All you need is the "mod" file for the mod you wanna incorporate into your forum:

http://www.boardmod.org/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=newsy22 (final)

http://www.boardmod.org/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=beta_y22 (beta)

For major upgrades .. you have to wait for the authors of your favorite mods to update their mods consistent with the new upgrade. Some mods don't need to be upgraded, but most do. Altho the modders are usually very fast with their updated mods .. posting them within a day or two of any new release.

BoardMod and available mods are one of the reasons I keep sticking with YaBB.
