Title: Ghost 10 crashes constantly during backup
Post by Jayhawk on Mar 25th, 2008 at 8:44pm
A few days ago I inadvertantly deleted a couple of applications related to Ghost 10 - i.e. LiveUpdate.  I have removed (using the Norton Removal Software) and reinstalled Ghost several times since then, all to no avail.  Ghost simply will not complete a backup of my C drive to my E drive ( I have four drives installed and use the E drive for backups only).  Each time I try, the system crashes (after varying times into the backup process), reboots and says it has "recovered from a serious error".  Prior to the inadvertant removal, Ghost worked flawlessly.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Is your E drive internal or external USB2 drive?

Any other Norton software that was installed?  If so, re-install it, then uninstall it cleanly first.

It's hard to know exactly the cause, so I'm going to just give you a shotgun list of things to try:
1. Run LiveUpdate from within Ghost 10 to see if there are any more updates.
2. Run Windows Update and make sure you have all critical XP updates as well as any optional .NET updates
3. Download crapcleaner (www.ccleaner.com) and let it clean out all temp libraries.
4. Create a new named folder on E, such as e:\NewGhost
5. Define a new backup definition, from c drive to e drive using the new folder name.  Change the name of the files from c_Drive0001 to CNew001 or something different.
6. Use normal compression.
7. Disable antivirus and any other suspicious background tasks when you run your first test.

Hope this will give you some ideas.

If it fails, write down blue screen error message.  Look in System Log for anything that has been logged at the time.

Post back any progress.  I hope this helps.

Also before trying again, run chkdsk e: /r and chkdsk c: /r
(you will have to restart for c to complete)

Hi,

Sorry it took so long to reply, but I've been busy with a client's project.

I tried all the things you suggested with no luck.  Ghost still crashes and reboots the system when I run a backup.  This time it backed up about half the drive before crashing.  Ghost's "restore" shows no recovery point, however.

Any more suggestions?

Is your E drive internal or external USB2 drive?

Reboots in the middle of heavy i/o tend to suggest hardware or i/o issue.  Have you tried a different hard drive, or internal from one IDE channel to hard drive on the other channel.

If USB2, get a separate (new) pci usb2 card, and connect the usb2 drive to that.

Hi Jayhawk,

Greetings!!!

Can you view your event log : Do you find any specific error message.

* Who is your Computer Manufacturer
* Do you have Norton GoBack or any other Symantec softwares

Removing the Liveupdate will not affect your product.

In response to the last two posts (and thanks for the posts, btw):

All 4 hard drives are internal SATA
Have not tried a different drive for backup but will do so
Computer manufacturer - I built it from components
Other Norton software - none besides Ghost

I look forward to any additional ideas.

I would verify that you have the latest BIOS firmware installed for your motherboard.  Also verify that you have the latest drivers for chipsets for your motherboard.  Also since you have a build-it-yourself pc, check for timing issues or timing settings in the bios setup.  Make doubly certain that your memory timing settings (and hopefully no overclocking!) match the latency etc of the memory you have installed.

Hi Jayhawk,

Greetings!!!
Can you check your eventlog in Norton Ghost and report back to us.

download the file www.spdrivers.notlong.com and save info as a txt file and attach the .txt file here.

I will check firmware & driver updates in the next couple of days and report back.  I have the driver text file ready, but do not see how to attach it to a post.

I have updated all firmware/drivers as of today.  BIOS does not allow any timing changes (i.e. I can't overclock, etc.) so that should not be a problem.  Before updating I removed Ghost 10.0 again using the Norton "remove" tool.  After updating I reinstalled successfully and tried to backup my C: drive - same results as before.  The backup ran for 30 seconds or so then the system rebooted.

I have the driver .txt file and the Ghost even log, but still do not know how to attach them to a message.  I guess I can cut and paste if necessary.

Still hoping to resolve this.

Jayhawk,

Do you have a recovery point that was taken when Ghost was working properly? That's always a good way to overcome these strange software problems.

Yes, I have an older recovery point - much older.  It is from early January of this year and a lot of changes/additions/etc. have transpired since then so I don't really want to restore that version.  My system is running fine.  I simply want to create a newer backup for that "just in case" situation.

I suppose I could restore just the Ghost portion of the older backup, but I'm not sure that would do any good or if there are other pieces of the puzzle that would have to be restore beyond just the Norton Ghost directory in Program Files.

I appreciate the suggestion, though, and would use it if I had a backup that was only a week or so old.  Thanks for your time.

Hi Jayhawk,

  Greetings!!!

Got the drivers info. All the drivers are up to date.
I just want to reload the Windows Image File Mini-Filter Driver. (Driver Name       : fltMgr.sys)

Try this:
Step 1: Go to C:\Program Files\Norton Ghost\Shared\Drivers\win32\win32
Step 2: Copy all the four System Files
Step 3: Copy them to the location C:\Windows\Sytem32\Drivers
Step 4: Restart

I also able to find the Acronis True Image system files. Do you have the software installed on your computer?
Try Clean boot only with Windows + Symantec files enabled and try to do the backup.

Revert back for any clarification:
