Seems there is a "Search by User" bug, as described here:

I am looking into a fix, but just wanna let you know that it is a known issue.

I patched the file UserSelect.pl with code highlighted in Reply #15:

Still seems slow, but works. The patch does not speed things up for large forums like ours (>1K members), but should keep it from timing out.

I have deleted more than 5,000 inactive members in the last year. So that should help speed things up.
