Title: More memory/RAM for the Rad laptop
Post by Rad on Jul 21st, 2008 at 3:19pm
hi.

i'm thinking of getting more memory for my laptop, which currently has 512-MB.

i'm guessing this comes in the form of 2x256-MB dimms:

http://www.laptopmemoryupgrade.com/memory/GatewayMX6124Memory.html

my laptop is gateway mx6124.

it's ~2 1/2 yrs old.

i'd like to move up to at least 1-gig, or even 2 gigs, as that is what it seems this model supports.

but i also heard rumors about windows xp (which i use) not being able to use more than 1 gig.

is that true? what are your experiences.

i don't want to buy 2 gigs only to find i can't use it.

insight? advice?

gracias.

after a good amt of research, i purchased two 1-GB sodimms:

so i'll be upgrading from 512 MB to 2 gigs .. for $44.

good deal i thot.

while there i also ordered a 160-gig hdd:

(i now have 60 gigs chocked full to the gills.)

NO....the max ram for Windows XP (32 bit) is just a scooch over 3 gig's.

But XP (any version) will run very nicely on 2 gig's.
The performance on my own, home-made, PC took a real jump in the positive direction when I upgraded from one gig to two gigs, but when I upgraded to three gig's, I saw virtually NO performance increase at all in XP.

I did that primarily because I run Vista Ultimate on this same mobo, but from a separate HD.  Vista is much more Ram-Hungry than XP is.

Sounds like you made some good buys!
Enjoy!
