Title: Ghost does not see my USB hard drive
Post by Wakenaam on Oct 13th, 2008 at 7:44pm
Gentlemen: I am trying to make a copy of my hard drive via a USB port using Ghost 2003. The USB external hard drive is recognized in Windows XP completely. However, when I try to make a copy by booting off a  3 1/2 inch floppy, I keep getting the message "Cannot clone one drive", or something like that.  How can I fix this? Thanks for any help.

WELL, first off, where are you plugging in the USB drive?
It MUST be connected directly to one of the motherboard USB ports,
and NOT an expansion card or USB hub.

Then there are settings in your BIOS to let a USB Drive be seen in DOS as if it were an IDE drive.
Having NO idea what computer you're using, since you didn't do your do's and tell us, I can't tell you exactly what setting to use.

It might be something like "USB Legacy Support".
I just turn ON all the USB options and that usually does the trick. :-?

So once you've done these things, Ghost should be able to see your USB drive. (assuming it's been formatted, of course)

Let us know if you get it.

TheShadow: Thanks for your response. The computer is a Dell Optiplex GX110, running at 733 MHz. The USB hard drive in question shows up everywhere in Windows XP.  I can scan it and transfer files to and from it, no problem.  Only Ghost is not seeing it. I checked my BIOS which only has 2 entries.  USB emulation was off, I set it to on and USB controller was already on. The exact error message is:"Only one drive-Cannot clone locally (11050).  Is the 2003 Ghost boot floppy too old? Thanks for any feedback.

USB showing up in Windows XP has no relationship to USB showing up when booted to DOS for Ghost procedures--yes--it does mean your *system* appears compatible with your USB HDD in Windows--as it should--USB is a Windows storage device standard--and was never *meant* to be for DOS!!!!

Is this the first time you have tried to access a USB HDD in DOS?--or have you been able to do that in the past?

Is you boot disk loading the DOS specific USB drivers--Ghost 2003 shipped with Iomega DOS drivers--and many use the Panasonic USB drivers because they offer wider compatibility with more USB devices and controllers--A Better USB 2.0 DOS Driver for Ghost + More!.

Boy, is that a loaded question.  How would I know?

If you're using the boot floppy made from a Ghost install on your HD, then it's probably PC-Dos or DR-DOS,,,,I can't remember which DOS it used.

But I found both of those DOS's to be seriously lacking.  Some people prefer a boot disk formatted under Windows 98 and I prefer a boot disk formatted under Windows ME.  Different strokes for different folks!

As for Ghost itself, it should be Ghost 2003, Build 793, to conform to the latest motherboards, hard drives and usb drives.

If you don't know what build you have, you can boot up with your Ghost disk, go into the folder where Ghost.exe lives and type:
Ghost.exe /ver
and the program will print out its Copyright screen with the build number.
Here's the printout from a Ghost 8.3 disk.

Symantec Ghost 8.3.0 (build=1331, cdrlib=3.1.31). Built on Nov 28 2005 17:37:37.
Copyright (C) 1998-2005 Symantec Corporation. All rights reserved.

If your build is not 793, then you'll probably want to get an upgrade.

So, come back when you have your build number.

TheShadow: You are absolutely right.  When I ran the command I got:

Norton Ghost 2003 (Build =775, cdrlib=3.1.24)
Copyright (c) 1998-2002 Symantec Corp. All rights reserved.

So where do I go from here? Thanks again pal.

Older versions of LiveUpdate will not find Ghost 2003 updates--you have to update your version of LiveUpdate (oddly--Symantec does not LiveUpdate its LiveUpdate automatically!).  Here's the link for the steps to get the most recent LiveUpdate that can access the *archive* server where Ghost 2003 resides:

How to obtain the programs updates that are archived on Symantec LiveUpdate server

There's more discussion about updating Ghost 2003 in this *stickied* thread:
You need Ghost 2003 build .793 to use SATA and -FNI, here's how.

here is some useful info read by 101,212 people

the link to the floppy do not work
but use ISO buster to remove the boot floppy from the 2003 Cd
which is bootable.
and then hack it as required.
or simply boot with 2003 Boot Cd.

as shadow pointed out the memory stick got to be connected tp
motherBoard USB 1.1 and formated fat32 or fat

Thanks a lot for all the feedback guys. I followed exactly the Liveupdate instructions and made 2 bootable floppies. However, when I checked, the build was still 775 and cdrlib 3.1.24 (whatever that is).   When trying to Ghost to my USB HDD,  I still get the message  "Only one drive, cannot clone locally". About to give up.

Looks like the update did not occur successfully!  ?Try again?  *cdrlib* = CD Rom Library--settings for various CD ROM drives.

I'm not sure you have to have the most recent build of Ghost to access a USB external HDD--but you do have to have the DOS USB drivers--either supplied by Ghost 2003--or an outside third party DOS USB driver, for example:  A Better USB 2.0 DOS Driver for Ghost + More!.

Post the files on your boot disks, plus the content of the *autoexec.bat* and *config.sys*--those files can be opened using NotePad.

Looks like the first boot disk loads the USB 1.0 and 1.1 drivers that mount the USB controller--but you are not loading *guest.exe* that would assign a DOS letter to a USB HDD that is hooked up to the the USB controller.

Is you USB controller USB 1.x?

Is your USB HDD USB 1.x?

Do you have NTFS partitions or FAT32 partitions on the USB HDD?

Is the USB HDD hooked up directly to the USB controller--or to a *hub*?

When you boot to DOS with the boot disks--when it just says starting PC-DOS--press F8 function key--you should get the option to boot one command line at a time--this slows things down so you can see what happens with each line.

Go thru each step one by one.  What result is reported with the loading of *ohci.exe* and *uhci.exe*?

Nightowl: I cannot determine the exact version of my USB controller, but it has a date of 7/1/2001 and a version number of 5.1.2600.2180. I ran Kelly's Korner and it reported "Your computer does not seem to be USB2 enabled". The file system is FAT32, and I plug the USB cable directly into the port, no hubs. The step-by-step with the floppies gave:

Device=USB\UHC1.exe
USB LInk, USB Stack Driver, ver 2.5 (build 10/24/2001)
UHC1 USB controller initialised
Device=USB\OHC1.exe
USB Link, USB Stack Driver, ver 2.5 (Build 10/24/2001)
Existing Driver installed...LastDrive=Z
Process Autoexec.bat
echo off
Set TZ=GHO+05.00
Mouse.com
Mouse driver installed
echo loading...
Loading...
CLS
if FROMFLPY=FROMFLPY go to FLPYBOOT
goto FLPYBOOT
echo Insert Ghost boot disk 2 (contains ghost.exe)
Insert Ghost Bootdisk 2 (contains ghost.exe)
pause
Press any key to continue...
if exist a:\ghost\ghost.exe goto GHOSTFND
goto Ghost find
cd \ghost
echo loading
Loading ghost.exe
.
Message about cannot clone locally
.
.
goto end

Hope this can help you. Thanx

Well, looks like both USB drivers are loading the DOS USB controller portion of the driver successfully.

When you load either of the above drivers--did you notice if your external USB HDD activity lite flashes at all indicating that the driver was communicating with the USB HDD?

When you load Ghost and attempt to choose a source drive and then a destination drive--you do not *see* a listing for your USB drive either on a HDD available listing screen or in the drop down menu selection box?

By the way, how big is the USB HDD?  Is it USB v1.x or USB 2.0?  If USB 2.0 only, it should probably be backward compatible with USB v1.x--but in DOS--maybe this is a potential problem of mis-matched components and driver software--with the age of your system--back to 2001 or 2002--you probably have USB 1.x controllers on the system.

I presume you used the Ghost Boot Wizard to create that boot disk set?  Apparently you unchecked the box that said to have the Ghost DOS USB driver assign a drive letter to any FAT partition on the USB HDD?  Could you make a new boot set that leaves that check box checked--that should add *guest.exe* to the boot files and *autoexec.bat* command lines.

What happens when you use the step by step loading of the boot files when you attempt to load the *guest.exe* command line?

NightOwl, The Shadow and others: Thanks for all the help on my problem. I figured I am not smart enough to do all the tinkering required to get Ghost to work, so I used a very simple software called XXClone Home Edition which did a wonderful job. I used it straight, no tinkering involved to get the USB ports to work. Thanks again for all the feedback. Keep up the good work!!!!

I don't know if this little tip will ever help anyone or not, but I found it by just 'tinkering' with Ghost when it apparently did not see my CD drive.

I like using my PS2 mouse with Ghost 2003 (or above), but I recently had this problem with the mouse NOT being able to scroll down the drive list to see the CD drive at the bottom of the list and below the lower edge of the drive window.

I thought I was loosing my mind.  I knew the drive was there and that Ghost should see it,,,,so what to do?

Well, to make a long story short, I let go of the mouse and went to my up and down cursor keys on my keyboard and VOILA I was able to scroll down the drive list below the lower edge of the drive window and sure nuff, there was my CD drive and I was able to continue making my Ghost backup to my CD/DVD drive.

Why the mouse would not allow me to scroll down that list is beyond me, but now I know NOT to rely on it completely.

Good Luck,
The Shadow  8-)

Friends: Out of frustration, I tried another software to clone my hard drive to a USB external drive, which worked but took more than 4 hours. I still believe in GHOST.  GHOST is the best for speed. I am up to my neck with tinkering with the files on my Ghost #1 floppy to get it to work. Could someone send me a link or by e-mail of the files on the #1 floppy which would see my USB HDD? Thanks a lot pals.

Sir,
It's frustrating for me, because I can't supply you with ANY USB drivers.
On my two computers, one seven years old and one 1.5 years old, I've NEVER had any problem with Ghost seeing anything that's plugged into my PC.  I've NEVER had to use any drivers or switches to get Ghost 2003, 8.3 or 11.5 to do exactly what I want it to do.
I guess someone UP THERE loves me. ;) ;D ;D ;D

I guess I'd have to blame your motherboard for all your problems.

Good Luck to you!
OH, and Happy Halloween!
