Title: Format my HDD or not?
Post by hammer on Nov 2nd, 2008 at 9:52am
Hi there,

i have made an image of my HDD and saved it on a spare HDD in case something happens to my current copy of XP.

if windows XP crashes and i need to restore the image to my current HDD with the corrupted copy of XP, do i have to format that HDD first, or will Ghost.exe do that for me?

if ghost.exe does not format it for me and i dont format it myself, then what will happen if i restore the image? will the exsisting files remain there, such that i can just delete it after the restore? or is having 2 WINDOWS [root] folders going to cause problems?

Many thanks in advance.

You don't need  to do anything. Ghost over writes everything, including the MFT (Master File Table) if NTFS or FAT (File Allocation Table) if FAT32.

Over writing the MFT/FAT is equal to a quick format. A full format also checks the disk which is not necessary unless you suspect disk error.
