Title: Memeory allocation error
Post by Blaktop on Jan 16th, 2009 at 11:39pm
Hi, I have used Ghost 2003 for a number of years without a hitch. Today I tried to make an OS image using my trusty old boot disk as I have numerous times before. I went through all the selecting the drive to image, location where the image will be saved etc, when I clicked Create Image (or whatever the button is called) I got an error message saying:

Error - Could not allocate page table memory.

Memeory allocation error

Could not load COMMAND.

Since I last did an image I have installed a new motherboard, CPU and video card and done a fresh install of XP. Now I want to take image of a good clean OS I get this error. I have created a new boot disk, thinking my old one may have become corrupted to no avail.

I have always done imaging using the PC-DOS boot disc, preferring to image an OS that is not actually running.

Can anyone give me any ideas why this has started happening.

Details....Details....What motherboard, what CPU and What socket type?
Then what version of Ghost 2003?  That is, what build number?
If not build 793, then it probably won't work with a NEW motherboard.

From the DOS prompt on your Ghost boot disk, type:
Ghost.exe /ver
and press enter to get the build number.

That fact bit me in the arse when I upgraded to a new mobo with an AM2 socket (for the cpu chip).

I had to upgrade my ghost 2003 to build 793 for it to work.
All later releases of Ghost work OK.

Unfortunately, Ghost 2003 is the last version of the program that's small enough to fit on a bootable floppy disk. :'(

Good Luck,
The Shadow  8-)

"Shadow" ... curious, how would you do this with a thumb drive? Or would that not be possible?  Thanks

I don't think that would make any difference.
You boot up with whatever media you're using to run Ghost and at the DOS prompt, after the boot-up, you run:
Ghost.exe /ver

If your Ghost.exe file is in a Ghost folder, then you would have to change directories to that folder before executing the command I gave above.

That command to change to the Ghost directory is:

cd\Ghost

I just booted up my test system to see if maybe the build # was in the program as it booted up.  It is NOT.  Oh well...... I tried!

Stay warm..... it's cold in FL today.
When I booted up my test system, it gave the core temp as 20 degrees C. (58 degrees F)

Cheers!

Sorry it took a while to get back to you......for some reason the email notification of a reply isn't working.

A little more detail:

I have run Ghost successfully with an Abit NF7S/AMD3200, Abit IP35-E/E6850, Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3P/Xeon E 3110......all on XP Pro or Vista Ultimate as an OS. Recently I bought an Asus P5Q Pro and Q9550 and that's where the problem started.

My Ghost is version 793....it comes up with:

Norton Ghost 2003 (build= 793  cdrlib=3.1.25)

Ooooops!

Ghost 2003 won't back up a Vista drive.

You'll need at least Ghost 11.5 for that.
Or maybe Acronis 9.....that works fine for Vista.
That can even be had for FREE.  We've discussed that in another
forum dealing with Alternate Backup Programs.

The new mobo that you're having problems with.... is that a socket 939 or AM2 , by chance?
Ghost, ver 793 should work with both.

I run Ghost 2003, build 793, with NO switches, on my own MSI mobo with a socket AM2 processor and three SATA2 HD's.
I attribute a lot of my own successes to my MSI K9N Platinum mobo.
(this mobo is just fabulous!)

You did say that your problems started when you installed an Asus mobo.
Right?
That seems to be such a re-occurring theme, I'm surprised that anyone who reads the internet would buy an Asus mobo these days.

Oh well, the deed is done.  I feel like I could probably get Ghost going for you if I had that PC here on my workbench, but from this distance, I'm out of ideas.  Sorry, I'd love to help you. :'(

Bring it on down here (Central FL) and we'll work it out.

Have a great day now, y'hear?

Grrrrr!  I just lost my Satellite ISP due to a rain storm.  I had to revert back to my Dial Up ISP to finish this post.  Thank you Ma Bell!

Actually it's a P45 Intel based board with an Intel Quad Core 9550. Ghost 2003 works with my Gigabyte P45 board. OS is not important as I only use the PC DOS part of Ghost......only install it to make the boot disk.

Anyway, thanks for your help.....I'll explore other options.... [smiley=smiley.gif]
