Did something prompt you to ask them about your disk space?

when i back-up the entire site using cPanel's utility, i saw the resulting image was < 1 gig.

yet their 'grove' proprietary monitoring interface said i was using close to 9 gigs.

so i was curious about the difference.

they give me 30 gigs with my account.

Your site is mostly text.  All your guides and the front pages are html, which is text.  Your forum is also stored in flat text files.  They probably use gzip compression on their backups.  Gzip can achieve more than 8 to 1 compression of text.  Binary doesn't compress as well.
