Title: Proliant MB Died. Can I install HD in new server?
Post by shawn on Aug 4th, 2009 at 12:19pm
Hi all!  Long time lurker, first time poster!

A friend of mine has some business software that was running on an HP Proliant ml350 server. The server has a full-length U320 SCSI card attached to a hotswap HD cage with 2 mirrored hard drives.

The motherboard died and a new proliant ml350 server was ordered. Most everything is the same as the old server, just newer.

They restored their data to the new server from tape, but the crash happened a day AFTER the latest backup. The goal is to boot those old drives and print the data that was entered post-backup.

Can I just remove the SCSI card and HD's from the NEW server, set them aside, then install the OLD SCSI card and HD's and boot using the new server?

The OS on those old drives is openSUSE Linux.

I suppose the worst thing is that it would start asking for drivers since the OS sees newer hardware. anything else to watch for?

I figured if it doesn't work, it just wont work.  I'll put the drives back as they were and the new server will boot back up with the new drives as it did before.

Is there a better way to do this that I'm not thinking about?

TIA!

why not just order a new mobo? (same model, chipset, etc.)

that would make it easy. plus cheaper.

Well, I just need to print off a days worth of records, then be done with the machine altogether.

Since they already spent $5k on a new server, I thought the free option would be to temporarily install the HD's from the old server in the new one, boot them up, print out what they need and then put everything back again.

I'm just looking for encouragement that this will work I suppose :)

oh, and Rad, I was LOL at your bathroom "situation".   :o

Ya, it should work.  As long as Suse has all the kernel modules (drivers) it needs to talk to the new hardware.
