Wonder if the krappy economy is having an effect on the popularity of open source programs?

How might somebody glean statistical metrics over time?

You can glean trends by keeping an eye on news feeds like Network World and Slashdot, but actual statistics on any kind of large scale would be very difficult to obtain/verify/find/understand in context.
