Title: image creation vs image restore switches Post by besonen on Feb 2nd, 2010 at 4:04am
recently i discovered i was having a difficult time restoring certain images.
i was able to avoid the problem with these parameters: -ntc- -fni -ffx -fns -ntil if the above switches/parameters allow for image restoration, should i use these same parameters when creating an image--to insure that the image is restorable? thanks, david |

Well, short answer--sounds like you are able to restore the image now--apparently without using those switches to create the image--so if it's working, you're *done*! But, the longer answer--apparently there are one or more problems with HDD access and possibly file system errors that don't cause an error when creating an image file, but show up when restoring an image file--you might want to troubleshoot those issues to see if they can be resolved....but, again if it's working, maybe one shouldn't fix what's *not* broke--well, at least not broke completely--just need the right switches ;) ! I'm curious--how did you come up with that list of switches to deal with your restoration of the image file problems--were there error messages that pointed you in the right direction--with all the available switches, it would seem to be a large task to try them all to find the right number and combination to finally get success! These have to do with HDD access by Ghost through the HDD controller: Switches: Drive detection. If Ghost encounters a problem, it will often create a *Ghosterr.txt* file: Description of Ghost Diagnostic Error File And, you can run a diagnostic test to create a *GhstStat.txt* file: Description of the GhstStat.txt diagnostic file The above may give you clues as to whether all those switches are needed--or, perhaps only one may be necessary. Looking those switches up (Switches: Alphabetical list of switches), looks like those may have to do with a NTFS issue--did you get errors pointing to the image file--or to the destination HDD? You might have to run a disk utility to repair any NTFS inconsistency(s)--that might resolve needing to use those switches. Let us know what you decide to do--and the results! |
