Title: How do I transfer a gho file to a restore CD
Post by Paul on Aug 26th, 2010 at 2:44am
Hi all - Pretty new to this and hope someone can advise.

I have a system with a GHO file of the image for the computer. It is in My Documents. This file is pristine and I do not want to run ghost again to make another to the CD.

I have Ghost 2003 and have spent hours trying to get this file and burn it to a series of CD's for full restore.

Does 2003 allow me to do this?

@ Paul

Can you tell us a little about your computer? Hard drives, partitions, how much data in each partition, Operating System? Which partition holds the .GHO? How large is the .GHO? Do you have an external HD?

Have an 8 gig gho file stored in my documents. This will brng the computer back to what it should be. Virus had destroyed much before I could get it.

I have Ghost 2003 and want to get the gho file onto restore disks so I can bring everything back to the way it should be.

I have been through 2003 trying to get the gho file to go to disk.

Should I be trying to restore the computer from the gho file in windows. I thought it best to do from CD on computer startup.

@ Paul

I'd really like to help you but we won't get anywhere unless you answer my questions. See Reply #1.

You are on the wrong track with using the image.

I read the OP's first post and I'm scratching my head, wondering how the GHO backup file ever got into a My Documents folder on C: ???  Or was it on C:, or some other drive, like D: ???
Ghost will not place a backup file on the same drive (partition) that it's backing up.  So for that file to be on C: it would have to be a file made off of some other drive than C:.  Eh?

At one time, most experts were agreeing that you can't make a Ghost backup image file to a hard drive and then move it to CD's and ever expect it to restore properly.  When Ghost writes a backup file to a certain location, it expects to find it there when a restore is called for.
Is that correct or did I misread that from earlier posts?

@ OldCasper

If Paul provides the relevant information we can help him. We aren't mind readers.

I guess that's what I'm attempting to do.....read minds!

It can sometimes be fun and other times an exercise in futility.

Ghost is simple to use, if run the way it was designed to be run, but it's also very specific on what it will allow a user to do and not to do.

In reading through this forum, I see a lot of folks trying to do things with Ghost that it was never designed to do, and getting into all sorts of troubles.
IMHO, Just follow the rules and it's a pretty nice program.

Maybe the OP will fill in the blanks and you'll be able to help him.  I'll be watching to see how this thread turns out.

O.C.

Why do you think its on C: drive?  On my setup 'My Documents' points to my D: drive. The op probably has something similar :)

Hello
the answer to your qustion is
no you can not do that with ghost.exe
your best bet is partition your drive using parted magic
then use ghost to copy Disk  the image  to second partition
then you can recover it manually using your 2003 bootable CD
or read link below and use IMB boot manager (LENOVA)
press F10 to boot from the recovery partition.

here is a link to a ZIP file containing all the floppies mentioned in ghost bootable CD,
http://rapidshare.com/files/284521754/postBox.zip
Parted magic boot cd link is here
http://partedmagic.com/download.html
copy the iso to CD-r with imgburn not Nero(google it)
