Title: create a restore partition?
Post by flacco5 on Sep 23rd, 2010 at 7:51pm
hi,

my first post here.  i searched; and i hope i'm not asking a question that has been asked before.

is there a ghost8/ghostcast server solution that enables a restore of an image to a partition that ghost itself makes?  (i don't think so.  however, this would really solve some problems.  particularly how to resize a partition for an XP machine without paying for Partition Magic.)

thanks.

There are threads here but this one is fresh in my mind. Is this what you are after?

hi Brian,

the solution that i saw pertained to Windows Vista.  Vista is the first MS operating system that lets you resize your primary partition.

i was looking for it on XP.  so, i decided to pick up Acronis's Disk Director to make the new partition.  if successful, i hope it will be easy enough to recover the ghost image to it.

so, unfortunately i abandoned the idea of having ghost create a partition on an XP machine.  thanks for the help, though.

hi,

i have used Acronis Disk Director 11 to create about a 18-20 gb partition on the pc i want to restore ghost to. On this PC i now boot off C but I have E drive to put data in.

i don't want to restore the ghost image so that the PC i restore to attempts to boot the other image.  instead, i would like to restore the image to the E drive so i can look at the files.

however, Ghost doesn't see the E drive.

reviewing these instructions:
http://ghost.radified.com/ghost_3.htm

using ghost 8.2, i choose Local/Disc/From image.  i find the image.  as soon as i do this a new dialogue appears asking for the destination drive.

they are numbered 1 and 2.  judging by the numbers, 1 = C + E.  2 = my external drive with the image.

Is there anything i can do to get Ghost to recognize the E drive as a destination drive (and not write over C)?

thanks.

Try Local/Partition/From image

I'm having a lot of trouble understanding what you are trying to do.

Brian,

i tried local/partition/from image and chose the ghost file.  i'm confronted with the same two drives (1 & 2) that i described in my prior thread.

i'm trying to put a ghost image onto a newly created partition on a particular PC.  (the image probably has system files, but i'm only interested in looking at them; not trying to boot.)

however, ghost doesn't seem to recognize the new partition.  the #1 destination drive is reported to be the same size as the resized C and new partition E together; as if i never created the second partition (E).

hope this is clear, because i don't know what more i can say to describe it.  thanks.

Then you don't have to restore the image. You can browse the files with Ghost Explorer.

Are you using Ghost 8.2 from DOS?

Brian,

thanks for the quick reply.  i'm running it from BartPE.

i'm looking at Ghost Explorer right now.  i want to be able to copy these files to my new partition.  i feel like i'm pretty close.  thanks.
