Title: How many Ghost Recovery point sets?
Post by fotobits on Jan 24th, 2011 at 2:29am
I understand that the frequency of carrying out a backup procedure depends on how up-to-date the backup is considered acceptable, however, what determines how many backup sets should be maintained?

Why keep more than one?  Is it in case one set might become corrupted later, balanced up with available space?

I realise that space for one extra Base Recovery Point is necessary.

I think the answer is one of personal preference.  I will share what has worked for a home business computer at my home.  I had a poor experience with incremental backups with Ghost 12, so I now only use independent recovery points.  To be absolutely safe, I always have 3 independent points available.  Probably overkill, but at today's large drive prices, it isn't expensive to do so.  As a note, I have used Ghost 10, 12 and 15 extensively to recover without a failure when using independent sets.

Many thanks LWolff123.  I was disappointed to hear that Incremental Backups fell short of expectations, although gratified that Independent Recovery Points were sound.

I'm currently creating two Recovery Sets, which I'd felt was reasonable, however, I've no recovery experiences.....yet!

I look forward to hearing from other's experiences with Incremental Backups.

Noel,

As lwolff123 points out, backup decisions are personal.

I like Incremental backups and have had no problems. My preference is a Baseline Recovery Point every 2 weeks and daily Incrementals. I keep two full sets of Baseline/Incremental Recovery Points.

Do you have a spare (old) HD for testing?

Many thanks Brian.

I haven't a spare HDD, 'though testing in some way is a thought.

Currently, I backup C:Systems drive with weekly Incrementals and Baseline monthly.  A few important files from that partition are copied to a USB memory stick daily.

I backup E:Lightroom Pics Incrementally each time it is used, with a monthly Baseline.

I felt that to be OK.  Systems up to a week old seems to be acceptable, or is it?

If you haven't made any changes, sure.
