Title: Moving the Site to a New Server Post by Rad on Jan 6th, 2012 at 12:08am
Moving the site to a new server (bigger, faster, cooler). Now.
They said it'll take ~ 30 mins. If all goes well (.. there's usually some bugs/quirks/glitches to iron out at the new server). |

Yikes! And I was in the middle of composing a long response--luckily it did not get lost in the process--whew :) ! |

Is it me, or does not the site seem zippier and more responsive?

Yes! In the last couple months, there have been a lot of delays with a message on the bottom status line of IE 8 saying something to the effect *Waiting for Radified.........* Haven't seen that much this morning :) ! |

yeah, frustrating.
problems started after WiredTree upgradd to the latest version of Virtuozzo, the virtualization software they use by Parallels. I am senstive to and really hate lag, which they call 'latency'. Finally got frustrated and said, "If you cant fix the problem. pls move me to a new server." Which they did. =) [ Couldnt fix? ] We are now on the server. I will find out the hardware specs, since I'm always intersted in geeky stuff like that. =) |

I've seen that too but not only RADIFIED. On any site, that message might appear and reloading the page would in most cases terminate the wait. I always thought that I was actually waiting for IE8 ... ::) ... ! |

the #1 best way (limiting factor) for me to see how responsively the site is respondng is ..
.. using the moveable type blogging/cms software .. which is loaded onto the server .. a perl script .. with a mysql database attached. when the site is a little doggy, that web interface totally suks. the lag/latency kills any creativity you might have. now, that thing (new server) is nice! =) i had ear-to-ear grin (such a geek). new server has dual westmere xeons. http://ark.intel.com/products/47925/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5620-(12M-Cache-2_40-GHz-5_86-GTs-Intel-QPI) forget what old server had but this is *sweet* from where i am sitting. i asked if the server was 'full' .. or if they would be adding more clients. they are surprisingly tight-lipped about revealing any config details. i have been able to extract some goodies while chatting on the phone with some techs, but generally, if you ask too many questions as to how they config a server, or it's hardware, they shunt you off to a "Shift Coordinator" (hi, Jake) .. who talks in carefully worded statements .. like you are asking a submariner about the payload of nuclear weapons his vessel contains. [ "I can neither confirm nor deny ... " ] For example: Quote:

but, on the other hand, these guys are very open about problems. other web hosting providers try to blow smoke up yer ass about problems the server might be having. WireTree tells you how it is .. and goes to work to fix. I never sense info being filtered regarding problems. These guys are really good. They continue to impress me. |

totally impresses me how easily they can move the site .. something i've done a handfull of times. never a pleasant experience. always something to work out.
they said they had some probs with perl + cpanel, whic leads me to believe cpanal is a perl script. anyway, 30 mins later: Quote:

Don't know for sure what was going on, but yesterday afternoon there was a period where I could not load the site--kept *timing out* saying that the browser could not connect. Then, started getting just a *text* version of the webpage--no graphics--and loading was very slow. But, after about 15-20 minutes--things started working again as normal! |

yeah, the whole wiredtree complex was down due to 'network issues'.
update .. looks like they isolated the problem to a "core router" and had to yank it: http://radified.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1325963017 |
