Title: Need Help ... What to backup with Windows 7 and Ghost 15.0
Post by Tori-the-lab on May 4th, 2013 at 1:56pm

I am a long time user of Norton Ghost 14.0 with Windows XP.  This was very easy to use and I backed up the entire C drive each time.

I just installed Norton Ghost 15.0 on a new Dell Windows 7 machine.

Now when I go to back up my PC I see the following each on a different line):
Circle with a line through it that reads Dell Utility (*;\)
Circle with a line through it that reads RECOVERY (*:\)
OS (C:\)
and of course the 4th line shows my external HDD

What do I back up?  Does the Dell Utility and RECOVERY need to be baced up?

If so do I make 3 separate backups ... one for Dell Utility ... one for Recover ... one for C:\

Or create one backup and select all 3 options?

I am confused.

Steve,

Can you post a screenshot of Disk Management? This will tell us which partition contains the booting files and we can then decide what needs to be done.

Can you tell me how to do that?

Right click Computer, Manage, Disk Management. Use the Snipping tool and Save as Capture.PNG.

Attach like this.

Steve,

The 39 MB partition is for Diagnostics. It only needs to be imaged once as it doesn't change.

Note, the Recovery partition is "System, Active" which means it contains the booting files. Win7 won't boot if this partition is deleted. It only needs to be imaged once as it doesn't change. (Assuming you don't make partition changes)

Image the Win7 partition regularly.

Were you planning to resize the Win7 partition smaller and then create a Data partition? Or not?

One more question PLEASE ... so if I need to recover ... is there a particular order?  Can I do one recovery?  or 3 and do an add.

If you have Win7 issues (corrupt apps, virus, etc) then you only need to restore the Win7 image.

If you have a HD failure then restore the 3 images in turn to the new empty HD. One at a time in the current partition order. Choose Set Active for the Recovery partition. The Win7 partition is not the Active partition.

Thanks so much.  I wish the Norton documentation was better.

I have learned so much from these forums.

The documentation for Copy Drive is (and this applies to previous Ghosts) appalling.

You missed this question...

Probably not.  I am not very technical and think I should leave well enough alone.

What would be the advantage of that?

Honestly I have very little data.  I mostly use the PC for online mail, a few Office files and turbo tax (tax files are on an external HDD).

I got a really good deal on the PC as a bundle (free chip upgrade i5 to i7, bigger HD from 500 to 1T and a rebate).  This machine is really more than I need.

I love my XP PC but XP is going away so I bought a Windows 7.  Just looking to use it until Windows 9 comes out.

Good answer.

Restore to a new HD if a SRP is present

For the SRP

Verify recovery point before restore
Partition type : Primary
Check for file system errors after recovery
Set drive active (for booting OS)
Restore original disk signature
Restore master boot record

For Win7

Verify recovery point before restore
Resize drive after recover (unallocated space only) (ONLY if you want to)
Partition type : Primary
Check for file system errors after recovery

Restore to a new HD if a SRP is not present

Restore to the same HD if a SRP is present

For the SRP

No need to restore

Steve, you can regard your Recovery partition as equivalent to a SRP for the above options.
