Hi,
If you want to get rid of doubleclick ads etc

Anyone wants to share host entries ?

Hi,
creating a hostfile  on MS-OS  is really  cool.
Your browser needs to know the IP adresses
of all the links on any downloaded page.
So the browser first checks - is there a hostfile?
If there is none it gets the info via internet from
the chosen nameserver.
If  a hostfile is present it checks content for needed
hostadresses.
Now the cool thing : you assign the number
127.0.0.1  to any  hostname you like .
I assign  it to hosts like  xxx.doubleclick.net,
all the internetadvertiser I come across.
127.0.0.1 points to the local host viz yourself but
on the computer there is no such info.
So you get an errormessage but not banneradverts.
And this goes so fast your browser pagebuilding
time also improves.
Of course you also can assign real IPnumber to
the host you contact all the time. Cuts down
on browsertime to find the adress from the
nameserver.
My sample hosts file you can find at
http://195.74.192.154/~alilip/hosts.html

You  tried the links
on that host list ?
And received the message "this page cannot be displayed"?
That would be the purpose of it.
No link to sites - hosts - that only
provide adverts to you.
On lots of commercials sites on the internet they sell adverts.
Some of those adverts come from the hosts listed.
Of course such a list is always incomplete.
When you download a page from the internet
and it shows an advert , rightclick on it,
go to properties and find the host it came from.
If it is the same hostadress as the page you downloaded
than you are out of luck.
But when the adress is different from the downloaded
page - copy it to the clipboard - and paste it to your
hostfile under c:\windows\hosts
Just add a new line viz
127.0.0.1      newhost.adress.com-pasted-hear
and then refresh your browser - you will find
that the rightclicked advert is gone.
Yes you get a note error on page - but who cares
about that.
