the motto of the ancients (socrates, plato, aristotle) was 'moderation in all things'. i do not claim to follow this motto all the time, but it's worth mentioning.

I'm not a big drinker, but have a few friends who have a problem. Everyone I know who I'd classify as an alcoholic had major problems with their mother. Either their mother was an alcoholic, or just plain crappity smacked up.

I've done some research trying to understand the problem. THis is one of the more interesting links I've discovered. He needs to pare about half his words, but the ideas are still there:
