I need some amuinition to convince people that doing a drive image is not a waste of time, that it is only needed because I am incompetent at supporting computers. If I was incompetetent at supporting computers I would not be recomending dual HD's drive image, partition magic ect...

I am battling folk who beleive that an OS does not need to be backed up ! they think a computer gets flacking because of user ignorance and loading to many porograms.

Their solution now to a backup is mirror raid.
What good is it going to do to mirror a HD that just got a virus ?

A OS is like anything else you buy it is made to wear out.
Fortunatly, windows 98 can be imaged and when it gets flacky it can be restored.. IT AND ALL OF THE PROGRAMS THAT WERE Loaded. Grin

I am not one to bullshit, I need strong facts to use as leverage to convence this LLC that I am not just blowing wind out my mouth to sound smart here....

They think the problem is having their data backed up, or having a HD go bad.

Even the consultant po poos the idea of imaging the OS.s and I know fool well that he is looking at the $$$ in support to keep coming back and fixing a flacky OS.

Any solid eveidence that shows that it is not the user who screws the computer up, AND that the ONLY way to truley provide support for computers is to have this image.

I know this is true, but how do I EXPLAIN IT?

Any words or info that would provide evidence/leverage to prove the point to the computer illiterate ???

the best amunition is to *not* create a back-up image.

after their system shits the bed, or their boot-drive dies, and they have to re-install everything from scratch, they will get the painful message. i did.

i agree there are some ppl who don't need ghost. if al they do is check email & surf the web, they will prolly never need a back-up image.

It took me about 3 reformats and 3 reloads of all my software before I figured out how much time ghosting saves me.

I know people that wont ghost there box and tell me its a waste of time - I dont bother to argue...there is no use in it.

p.s. I tried norton ghost 2003....real easy to use.....they took the learning curve out of this version....I think a monkey could ghost a machine now.

I think the key to this is to stear away from the unfamilair term "ghost" or " image the hard drive ". Its seams I have no argument when I say " we must back up your system "

Who is going to say " ahh we dont need a backup " !!!

they dont need to know its a full OS backup ! Tech support or sales type people will say - " You can reinstall your OS and programs, Data is the thing you dont want to lose. " !
But we all know that statement has alterior motives

Takes me the better part of a week to re-install my o/s, apps & re-configure system settings.

Admittedly, I have more prgms than the average user, but I still feel that anyone would cringe at the idea of having to re-install everything from scratch.

Data is easy to back up. Just copy "My Documents" to another hard drive, or burn it to CDRW. But if I had all my data backed up & lost my system, I would still cry.

I am an IT slacker/pro and we support two training rooms here where I work. Ghosting or imaging is just common sense and "standard industry practice". When you've got to put "the whole system with apps" back on 44 machines you can take 4 hours each to do it manually, or you can image each one in 14 minutes. To me, this is a no brainer.

Picking up this post kinda late in the game, but...

I always hit the 'blue-bloods' where they live - with their hand on their wallet. I explain how using an imaging product can reload an ENTIRE system in about 10-15 minutes, where a full reload of an OS can take an hour or longer, depending on the associated apps that also have to be loaded. Take the average hourly wage of even a lowly disk-swapping tech, multiply that by 1 or two hours, then show them how much it would cost for that same tech to do it in 1/4 of an hour. Then, tell them that in that same 1/4 or 1/2 hour, that tech can do 5, 10, or 15 machines at once!

When working on a network, it is a common - and common sense - approach to have users store their working documents on a network 'my documents' rather than a local MyDocuments. This allows the IT administrator/slacker the option to reload a computer at any time, without the users losing their working files. There's even options with some imaging products - like Ghost - that let ya grab/restore user's profiles where, if they're just the normal 'user', you can swap OSes on them and they'll barely notice!

Anyway, that's my 2 cents.
