Ghost won't see image file
Feb 11th, 2004 at 4:56pm

I'm using Ghost 2003 with Windows XP Pro (NTFS) with 2 hard drives.
One for OS and Programs, the second for Ghost Backups.
Using a boot disk to start Ghost in DOS Mode.
Ghost starts up fine, but when I want to restore a image (*gho) that I know is on my back-up drive, it doesn't show it as being there.
Other older images are shown OK. If I restore the image from Windows XP/Ghost it works fine.
Note:The image that isn't shown is split into 660 MB/13 segements. Don't know if that is the problem or not.
Any help would be appreciated.

Yes..the image is fine. Maybe I'll try a normal backup with no splits and see if that works.

Ok....I tried a normal backup...still no luck. Norton does not see the image file in DOS mode. The file size 9 GB, don't  think the size should matter. I'm stumped here.

Both drives are IDE.
Drive One (OS)=NTFS/Master on Primary Channel
Drive Two (Backup)=NTFS/Slave on Primary Channel
I'm in the process of converting the Backup Drive to Fat32. I'll see if that makes any difference or not.

That's what I was going to suggest.

Have you double-checked the jumpers? mater/slave?

Since you can see/access the drive, we know it's not that. It only the images you create with Ghost 2003?

Have you updated Ghost to the latest version?

Ok everybody......I converted the drive to FAT32, made an image, and can now see it in the DOS Ghost console fine.
The one thing I did notice is that it did take longer to make the
image(from NTFS source) to the FAT32 destination than to the previous NTFS destination.
Anyway, thanks for the help.

I think that it´s a good idea to use FAT32 for the target partition when creating Images, not only because of Your problems but in general.

I had trouble with an Image which became corrupted and the probable cause was MFT fragmentation. I didn´t believe in that but have now thought about it a bit more.

Every file above a few kB in size is on a NTFS volume stored in two pieces, a small piece in the MFT record and the rest eslewhere. An Image of say five spans will be contained in five big chunks and five small pieces instead of in five big chunks only, as on FAT32.

Anyone who asks me will be recommended to use FAT32 partitions for storing Images!!!!!!

Ghost (Norton ghost 2003) CANNOT see image during restore if it is PASSWORD protected. You cannot see name of .gho file in dropdown menu. You MUST type the name (i.e. path)of image file in the proper field, to proceed for the restore. This trick is NOT mentioned in ANY documents.

Interesting!  I've not used Password protection on image files so I've not run across that issue!  Next time I create an image file, I'll have to try and remember to test that out to see what happens.

Thanks for the heads up!

I just tried it on my computer. The password protected file was seen in Ghost 2003 just like any other file. Any ideas why we differ?

Pleasure.

Please try simulating restore of password protected .gho file directly into DOS mode, (not in windows).
One more thing, I wonder why symantec has not mentioned TYPE of encryption used to encrypt .gho file! (i.e. AES 256, AES 128 whatever).

Yes, I was restoring from a DOS boot CD. The password protected .gho appeared no different from a non password protected .gho. Have you tried this on several computers? I've only tried it on one computer but I will try others today.
