Ghost 2003 won't recognize a drive
Jul 15th, 2004 at 10:23pm

When I try and burn a boot disc, I can only select my A or B drive. I would like to be able to select my C or preferrably my D drive (dvdr drive) but it does not list the drive in the "Symantec Ghost Boot Wizard - Destination Drive" screen, for Ghost 2003. It's a NEC Dvd RW ND2500A on win2k?

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Thank you for the reply

I understand how to make a bootable floppy, but my problem is that I do not have a floppy drive on this machine, only a cdr/dvdr.

After I save the image.gho file to my hard drive, I can burn the .gho file, ghost.bat and ghost.exe to the dvdr. I also need to add all of the boot files to this dvdr, the question is, do I need to do 2 burns, or have 2 sectors, or can they all be placed inside of the root of the cd, without issue? On the site you gave me, it only references burning the image onto the disc media, where do the boot disc files go?

...

I've tested my boot disc and it works along with the default drivers for the media drive .... so it is ready to go for a burn

Hello Rayrey,

The link is not working, is there any way you can give a brief synopsis?

The boot wizard creates floppy boot disks only  Sad .

If you do not have a 'floppy drive', the easiest method I have found to make a 'bootable CD or DVD' is to use the Windows interface for Ghost 2003, begin the backup, and then select the destination as a recordable CD or DVD.  If you have a small partition, or a partition with less data so it will fit on a single CD, you can use that as a source and avoid having to burn to multiple CD's.  Go through the whole process, and now you have a 'bootable' CD with Ghost on it.

When you boot from that CD, you end up at Ghost, and you can use Ghost to do whatever Ghosting you wish--you are not 'restricted' to the particular image you made to that CD.  The only down side, for unknown reasons, Symantec did not include mouse support on their built in process of creating a bootable CD.

I found a work around for the mouse issue.  See here:

NORTON GHOST - DOS - SAVED IMAGES COPIED TO CD-ROM
Reply #7 - Jul 28th, 2004 at 3:03pm

I recently copied a hard drive, following your instructions to split the files into 630Meg chunks.

As I couldn't burn the images directly as Ghost was incompatable with the CD burner, I saved the Ghost images to a hard drive and later transferred them to to CD-ROMs using Nero to burn them.

When I did a test restoration the Ghost program, an error message that read --> Error: "Image file not created with Norton Ghost" when restoring or checking an image file <-- which is a Technical Support document < http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ghost.nsf/8f7dc138830563c888256c2200662ecd/... >.

This support document advises:

To assign a drive letter:
   1. Open Norton Ghost 2003.
   2. Click Options.
   3. Choose "External storage driver settings."
   4. Check "Assign drive letters."

This is impossible running Ghost from DOS.

To overcome this impediment I simply rewrote a Symantec CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT that installed the usual drivers for a CD-ROM drive and the called GHOST.EXE from the CD-ROM.

This worked perfectly with Ghost detecting a drive letter for the CD drive and properly installing the 5 images stored on 5 CD-ROMs without difficulty.

For completeness:

--> CONFIG.SYS <--

[menu]
menuitem=FROMFLPY, This computer was started from a Ghost boot disk
menuitem=FROMCD, This computer was started from a Ghost bootable CD

[FROMFLPY]

[FROMCD]

[COMMON]
DEVICE = oakcdrom.sys /D:cd1
DEVICE = btdosm.sys
DEVICE = flashpt.sys
DEVICE = btcdrom.sys /D:cd2
DEVICE = aspi2dos.sys
DEVICE = aspi8dos.sys
DEVICE = aspi4dos.sys
DEVICE = aspi8u2.sys
DEVICE = inicd.sys /D:cd3
LASTDRIVE = Z

--> /CONFIG.SYS <--

--> AUTOEXEC.BAT <--

@echo off
SET TZ=GHO+05:00
MOUSE.COM
CLS
LH \MSCDEX.EXE /D:cd1 /D:cd2 /D:cd3
echo Loading...
if %config% == FROMFLPY goto FLPYBOOT
if %config% == FROMCD goto CDBOOT

goto FAILED

:FLPYBOOT
echo Insert Ghost boot disk 2 (containing Ghost.exe)
pause
if exist a:\ghost\ghost.exe goto GHOSTFND
goto FLPYBOOT

:CDBOOT
echo Insert Ghost boot disk 2 (containing Ghost.exe)
echo To run Ghost.exe from a hard disk or CD, press Ctrl-C at the following prompt
echo then change to the appropriate drive letter and type 'Ghost'
pause
if not exist b:\ghost\ghost.exe goto CDBOOT
b:
goto GHOSTFND

:GHOSTFND
cd \ghost
echo Loading...
GHOST.EXE  -forceusb -force1394
goto END

:FAILED
echo Unknown boot menu selection
goto END

:END

--> /AUTOEXEC.BAT <--

I made the first CD-ROM bootable and copied these files along with:
oakcdrom.sys
btdosm.sys
flashpt.sys
btcdrom.sys
aspi2dos.sys
aspi8dos.sys
aspi4dos.sys
aspi8u2.sys
inicd.sys
mscdex.exe
COMMAND.COM
mouse.com
mouse.ini
inicd.sys
IBMBIO.COM
IBMDOS.COM

as well as \GHOST\GHOST.EXE

into the root of the CD-ROM and it became a standalone set of back-up CD-ROMs.

There is no rocket science involved but it sure eliminates that Error: "Image file not created with Norton Ghost" when restoring or checking an image file!

In closing, I want to express my appreciation of the hard work that you have obviously put into your web site and it has proved invaluable to me as I sit in a technologically isolated area.

Thx for contributing you batch-file skills.

I updated the guide to include your batch files on the batch-file page:

http://ghost.radified.com/ghost_4.htm

Looks like batch files need their own page now.

I also included a quick reference to this thread on this page:

http://ghost.radified.com/ghost_caveat.htm

under the heading "Bootable Ghost CD" (4th paragraph)

.. and updated the PDFs:

http://radified.com/Files/ghost_rad.zip
http://ghost.radified.com/ghost2_rad.pdf

These are the first PDFs I've created since upgrading to Acrobat v6 Pro. I hope no one has any problems with them. The file size actually dropped by 10-KB.

Sorry for my newbieness, but does that mean i need to create empty .sys file ? Because on my bootable ghost floppy there are no such things as those .sys files. The only .sys file there is is config.sys.

Thank you in advance, and great job btw

So, im sorry for spamming, but my actual problem is that my norton ghost boot floppy holds on 2 floppies, and when i load in, it tells me to insert disk #2 and at that point, it stops to work

Many of those *.sys* files are DOS drivers for SCSI optical drives--and for most folks, are not needed on a boot disk.  If, when loading, the driver *.sys* file does not see a SCSI device--it will usually report that the device was not found and proceed to the next driver.

The person who created the above boot disk apparently had reason to include multiple DOS device drivers so it would load needed drivers for *any* hardware combination.

I would suggest starting a new thread so it gets more attention.  It would help to add some details as to what version of Ghost you are using, how you created the boot disks, and what your hardware set up is that you are trying to use with Ghost.

Is there any error message?

You may need to post the files that are included on each disk, and the *config.sys* content and the *autoexe.bat* content.
