need recommendation for quiet hard drive

I purchased a WD3000JB and I can definitely hear it spinning. Since I need a "silent" hard drive, I was wondering if the Seagate ST3300831A-RK 300GB was as loud. Any advice will be appreaciated.
TIA

I don't think there exists such an animal as a "silent" hard drive. If it moves, it makes noise. But some are quieter than others.
5400rpm hard drives make less noise than 7200rpm hard drive, which are quieter than 10,000rpm hard drives, etc.
So get a HDD with a slower spindle.
I also think Seagate drives are the quietest.
But you should go to the StorageReview site, where they actually measure drive noise:

Make your own comparisons, and let me know what you decide.

My original 40GB hdd is as quiet as a mouse even when seeking and it's a WD,now i also have a 200GB Maxtor as strange as it is if i install it in the external case it's quiet as ,yet if i put it in the comp it is a lot noisier when it seeks,as for when it's just spinning there is only slight noise just like the original so i assume both are oil cushioned bearings, well the maxtor definatley is,there are two options you have me thinks, the cheapest option turn on your stereo or if space allows put the tower in a suitably sized cabinet and make breather holes .

Samsung Spinpoints are very quiet.
If you really want to quiet things you need to dampen or suspend the HDD.

That's a website that specializes in quieting computers.
Allthe information you could possibley want to know about the subject can be found there.
I'm an SPCR geek myself.
