Based upon a telephone conversation with Symantec Customer Support (585-350-0400), a Symantec subscription not only includes program updates and data file (e.g., AntiVirus definitions) updates as has previously been the case, but now additionally includes program upgrades.  For example, if your Norton Internet Security 2006 subscription expires in December 2006 and Norton AntiVirus 2007 (or any other component of NIS 2006) is released in November 2006, then LiveUpdate will download and install NAV 2007 in November 2006.  Thus, a Symantec subscription now includes both updates and upgrades.

Also, if you currently have Norton Internet Security 2005 installed with an active subscription, then the installation of Norton Internet Security 2006 will not extend the NIS 2005 subscription by one year – rather, NIS 2006 will start a new subscription period with a total duration of one year.  To append the NIS 2006 subscription onto the unused portion of the NIS 2005 subscription, call Symantec Customer Support (585-350-0400) and they will make the adjustment.
