Want to be Sure about the Drive
Jan 7th, 2006 at 6:55pm

Ok guys I'm just about ready to Ghost.  I have a SATA drive internal and a SATA drive in an enclosure connected to a SATA PCI controler. I tried my Ghost boot floppy and it's fine. I first tried booting then turning on the enclosure after the Ghost screen came up. It was obvious that the enclosure drive didn't show up. So I booted again with my boot floppy. This time the enclosure was on and the drive showed up. Now my only concern is when booted the first time it showed drive 1 and 2 . I was sure which was which. I have a 160 GB C drive and D drive of 60 GB that I use to store digital pictures. Well the second boot showed 1,2 and 3. Now the enclosure drive is a duplicate of my C drive ,size ,brand and all. Can I be safe to assume that #3 is the enclosure drive?

Assign drive labels, they show up in Ghost 2003.

Assuming WinXP (and it probably works the same in other operating systems):

In Windows Explorer, right-click the partition and select Properties. At the top of the window that opens, the cursor should be blinking in the "label field" for you to fill in.

Should have told you XP. Thanks for the help. At what screen with 2003 does the label show up. I did have my enclosure drive labeled   [GHOST] but the screen I saw only listed them as 1 2 3.

I always work from DOS, never from the Windows interface. In DOS, the partitions display the label when selecting the source as well as the target.

I'm not entirely sure--I will have to boot to DOS to confirm--but, I do not think the *source* screen shows labels in the DOS Ghost interface--that is a confusion factor if you have one or more *identical* drives!  (I have 3 Seagate 120 GB's on my one system now--and other that the Drive 1, Drive 2, and Drive 3--they all show as the *same*!)

WilliamP

The external HDD's are *enumerated* after internal HDD's when using DOS--so, most likely Drives one and two are your internal, and Drive 3 is the external.

How I make sure--in Window, just before I get ready to boot to DOS to do a Ghost backup, on my internal or external HDD, I create a sub-directory labeled with the two digit month and two digit day (so today would be *0108*)--so when I get into DOS and Ghost, when I select Drive 2 (where my Ghost images are stored on my internal HDD), I will see that sub-directory where I want to store today's image, or if I select Drive 3 (my External HDD), if that's where I had intended to store the image for today--then that sub-directory is there!

Also, for double checking, I think you can select *Partition >to Image*, and then select the listed Drive #, and then you will be presented with the list of partitions on that Drive #--and here the *drive labels* are listed--once you confirm that the drive labels are what you expected for the drive # you selected--you can *back out* (cancel) the initial selection of *Partition >to Image*, and proceed with confidence with whatever procedure you planned.

I'll confirm this later when I have the time and report back the results.

No question is stupid...but, possibly the answers are  Wink !

NightOwl,
maybe we're both right!

I have an old LapTop (Win98SE) with a single HDD with three partitions, C: (OmniBook), D: (DataBack) and E: (SystBack).

When creating an Image, in the first screen when the drive is selected, it only says "Drive 1" but when I have selected it, in the select partition screen, the partitions show up with labels.

It is "the same" when restoring an Image.

I have never used a hard disk with a single partition but it is possible that Ghost will skip "screen #2" for those hard disks.

Will Ghost recognize the enclosure drive as an external drive? It is connected to a PCI SATA host card.
