question about "split" command in Ghost
Jan 8th, 2006 at 8:54am

I tried to make a cd backup of my c drive with Ghost 2003. At first I got error messages about not being able to close the cds. So (from the suggestion in a previous post), I typed in exactly:
-split=650
in the Ghost Command Line (under Advanced Settings) to try to limit the data on each cd to 650MB. I was able to burn the 3 cds and also "check for integrity". Everything went successfully. However, when I inserted cd1 and cd2 and checked the data size in windows, it said that there was 700-701MB on the disks. I don't understand why the data was so large when I specifically tried to keep the data limited on each cd to 650MB.

The 700-701 MB is probably the available size on the CD. Check the properties for the file itself and remember that 650 MB = 665,600 kB.

I have a few questions. When I look at the ghost manual, it says to type in the Ghost Command line in the windows interface:
ghost.exe-split=650
to limit the file size to 650MB, but a previous post on this board said to just to type in:
-split=650
So which is the correct thing to type in?
When I insert the image cd and right click on the image icon and choose the last entry from the drop down menu, it says that the file size is 700MB, not 650MB as I would expect.

I don't use the Windows interface but to create the Ghost Boot Disks. I assume that the syntax should be the same and I only type in: -split=650 -auto

The "-auto" to instruct Ghost to autoname the spans.

Let's hope that someone using the Windows interface chimes in!

This is the cd image file size when I insert the first, second and third image cds respectively. (To get these numbers, I inserted the cds, right clicked on the Ghost image file icon and then chose the last entry in the menu.) Sorry, I don't know how to put a screen shot on here. (I am using Chinese windows xp so that the symbol after the file size number may not be readable on your computer.)
700 MB (734,330,880 ×Ö½Ú)
701 MB (735,838,208 ×Ö½Ú)
28.0 MB (29,428,862 ×Ö½Ú)
So my question is, even though I tried to limit the file size to 650MB ( by typing in   -split=650   in the Ghost Command line in the windows interface) why do I still have such a large file on my cds? I really don't like writing on to a cd completely to the edge of the disk.

It looks like maybe Ghost is ignoring the Ghost Command Line (under Advanced Settings) split switch--

But you state that by using that switch you now got past the error problem, and succeeded in creating an image set, and the image passed an *Integrity* test!  That suggests that the switch had an effect!

Here's another possibility--perhaps Ghost is using the extra space for background *overhead*, and it was incorrectly trying to place more data on the disc, before using the switch, than it will hold (does your optical drive have the most current firmware version?).

You could try using *-split=600* to see if that reduces the file size saved to the disc the next time you create an image.

Report back with your results.

No question is stupid...but, possibly the answers are  Wink !

For the purpose of experimenting, I decided to just burn the first cd (out of 3) image of my c drive. This time in the windows interface Advanced Settings>Ghost Command lline I typed in    -split=500    to try to limit the data on the cd to 500MB.The first thing I noted that the burning progress bar in DOS went to 53% on this first cd (which shows that Ghost did not respond to my 500mb limit command because previously when I didn't use any limit, the progress bar also went to 53% on the first cd at which point Ghost asked for the second cd to be inserted.)
Then, I got an error message about not being able to close the cd. (See log extract below, which also includes the type of burner I am using.) In conclusion, I would say that Ghost 2003 is quite useless for anyone but a savy computer user. The previous poster asked about the "firmware" on my burner and I have to say that topic is way above my comprehension. But I am a curious. If anybody has a simple, easy way to solve this problem, (how to limit data to 650mb per cd) please let me know. Also, I can say that the previous success I had with burning and integrity was sheer luck. Also, I don't know if I should mention this, but I got this  copy of Ghost 2003 from emule. Maybe the program is somehow defective.

Obviously, can't say for sure, but I suspect the program is not defective--but more likely not compatible with your optical drive--at least with its current firmware, and/or your version of Ghost, or from the Windows interface.

You could try creating the Std DOS boot disk for Ghost.  This starts Ghost automatically when you boot.  If you're comfortable with modifying *autoexec.bat* files, you could change the last line that should be:

Ghost.exe

to

Ghost.exe -split=650

to start Ghost in DOS with the *split* switch and see if it behaves differently in pure DOS.

But, if the *-split=650* continues to work successfully--and the integrity test confirms it--then that represents a *work around* to a problem that you are having.

Most folks using the *split* switch are saving the image files to the HDD first, and then later burning the files to optical media using a burner program--it's much faster that way.  Of course, if you don't have a second partition that allows for that--then you have to deal with what you have.

No question is stupid...but, possibly the answers are  Wink !

As an experiment, I bought one of these 730MB cds and  burned the first cd with no problem. Checking the Ghost image file on the cd said 700 MB (734,330,880). The cd vendor said these cds should hold 705MB with no problem. So maybe (buying 730mb cds) is truely an easy way to solve my problem of Ghost putting too much data on one cd and ruining the cd.
